there have been over 200 civil wars in world history with 35 more currently being fought. how is it that the "changers" associate our civil war game with the american civil war. we are geographically and historically removed from it. there are no signs, banners, promotions that in any way associate our game with the american civil war. i have never associated our game with any kind of connotation of the america civil war. anyone who does find an association is searching pretty hard to do so. the fact that they per sieve to be without any factual basis does not make it so. remember the good old days when we could agree to disagree on a point and move on. the fact that a vocal few can speak for all of beaver nation and duckdum is sad. i would guess that a poll would show that over 90% of fans from both schools would like the name unchanged.

Come on...how many Americans can name more than 1 or 2 civil wars that took place outside the US? Of the "35 more currently being fought," how many do you think the average American can identify? Don't be disingenuous. It is obvious that the American Civil War is the only civil war that is associated with the rivalry.

i would agree if our rivalry was called the american civil war. my point was the the term civil war is generic and does not imply the american civil war. agree to disagree

It’s done now and there are people closer to the situation that had their reasons for agreeing to the change. I’m willing to temper my views and give them the benefit of the doubt. I really don’t care what they call it at this point I just want to watch the Beavers play some sports.

I think it's a great name for our rivalry.
It is unfortunate that the American Civil War was fought over slavery and that one side was fighting to keep slaves. Perhaps this is why both schools are ready to drop the name. We don't need a name for our rivalry that might be misconstrued or misunderstood. There's no reason to connect our schools to that event, even if only in implication.
It's interesting to me because I love the name of the rivalry, so I don't really want it to change. I have civil war memorabilia--though mostly basketball related--from when I was a student there. I don't like the idea of this change.
So perhaps I can understand how difficult it must be for southerners to let go of their flag or remove the memorials. Even if their connection to these items is innocent, it doesn't befit them to hold on to that part of their past.
We can all rise higher.

I will wear my civil war shirt until it falls off me or I fall forever. I have ancestors that fought for the Union Army. Actually, I have one that fought in the Civil War against Great Britain in the late 1700s. He started when he was 15.

But I don't really care. The reason why I initially responded the way I did is because you worded your original post in a way that left the impression that if a fan of the rivalry was to identify the rivalry with any actual civil war in history, it could be just as well be any other civil war as opposed to the American Civil War, which I find to be disingenuous. If fans of the rivalry are going to attach or associate the rivalry name "Civil War" to any actual civil war, the only real logical choice is the American Civil War. I don't associate the rivalry name with the American Civil War. One of my best friends was a yuck through and through but we had a very polite and good-natured, I guess you could say "civil," hate for each other a few times a year but especially during football season.

There is nothing civil about the Civil War. As it should be with any rivalry.

Your memorabilia from OSU/uo "Civil War" hoops has zero to do with The South keeping alive Dixie/General Lee/Confederate Flag ad nauseam. That's really the point. The 2 "Civil Wars" are completely different. Your attempt at finding common ground is transparent.

Yes, even though the game has nothing to do with the battles, being connected in name to a war fought by one side for the right to enslave others taints the beauty of our game. Life is just like that sometimes. Regardless of how many times you add the equation, 1+1 will sometimes equal 3.
