"Pre-Med" is really just a collection of classes that are *recommended* for students who want to go to Med School, it's not a specific requirement for Med School. You can get to Med School with a Journalism degree if you ace the MCAT and took enough biology and chemistry to show your readiness. Whether or not Mik actually went through the Pre-Med program (I think she did), I'm sure she is just an MCAT test away from the med school of her choice.

My first gastroenterologist had an electrical engineering degree from OSU (as his undergrad).

Pre-med, yes, Medical School no. I was more perplexed that anyone affiliated with OSU apparently could not state with complete certainty that OSU does in fact not have a medical school. There is a tiny gray area regarding the topic. Indeed, NO OSU medical school, but the Doctorate Program in the OSU College of Pharmacy resides at OHSU in Portland.

Maybe, as a woman science, and possibly a medical career in her future, she concluded that the risk of team activity in the midst of a pandemic is not the most intelligent choice a young woman of promise can make. 🏀 GO BEAVS !! Ridiculous theory.
You're welcome.
I presume you were not the captain of your high school debate team! GO BEAVS !!

Ben Dull projects Gulich as making the final LA Sparks roster by beating out 6'4" Beatrice Mompremier, a second round selection out of Miami. We will know the announced rosters by tomorrow. Dull provides a relatively thorough salary cap and projected roster analysis on his Twitter site. However, he had predicted several days ago that Pivec would make the final Atlanta Dream roster instead of her being placed on the suspended list. Hopefully, his prediction for Gulich is a more accurate one. The LA Sparks roster now shows 13 players, including Wiese and Gulich (as predicted) but also the rookie Mompremier, the lone rookie remaining on the Sparks roster. My guess is that the LA Sparks will give Mompremier the option of being suspended or being waived in order to get the roster down to the allowable 12 by the end of today. Mompremier may opt to be waived to allow herself a chance to be picked up by another WNBA team if she believes there will be interest and the league will play games in 2020.

Ah, PreMed- the major for those pretending have plans for medical school. At least when I was in school, nobody I knew actually planning on medical school took this major with any serious aspirations for getting into medical school. I suppose it pacified some parents though.
I am now reading more into Pivec welcoming the idea of getting another year of eligibility - combine that with her choosing the 'suspended' route, it simply sounds like she has academic work that that is a priority for her to finish at OSU. She has to be honestly evaluating the sacrifices any WNBA career would have on her medical career aspirations, and I often wonder if the WNBA will ultimately win any of her time. Let me put it this way; if you had her overall talents, what is more attractive; being a WNBA star (at best) for a few years or pursuing being say a leader in a medical specialization at say say a major academic hospital? Yes, she can potentially always do the latter after the WNBA, but in reality a person wants to pursue now whatever is the bigger dream.

Sparks are down to 12, including Gulich. They picked up Kristine Anigwe as part of a trade w/ a player to be named later apparently. Looks like Maria Vadeeva is not joining them this year. So if there is a season, either Gulich or Anigwe should get some decent PT as the 4th big in the rotation behind the Ogwumikes and Parker.

I think folks need to keep in mind, I think this had less to do with Mik, and more with the league. If she doesn't make this "announcement", she was going to get cut. There were lots of players even drafted before Mik that got cut today. WNBA is already a tough league to make, and the COVID situation made it much tougher.

I don't know Mik's specifics other than what is flashed on a TV screen and from brief conversations with OSU personnel and parents. But, you don't have to have graduate course knowledge in the sciences. That is one of the many MCAT myths. As stated, any undergrad plus solid background in many sciences. But, great verbal and reading skills are highly valued. The AAMC states that students only need an introductory level of knowledge of physics, biology, organic and inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, psychology and sociology for the MCAT. So, more than what most think of as the "necessary" sciences, but not at the highest level. In fact success in pre-med course work/science coursework doesn't necessarily lead to MCAT success. Typically over 50% need a 2nd test. Specific test prep of 200-300 hours are suggested. Most of the 2nd testers are excelling in science, but unprepared in verbal and critical thinking. There are also testing limits. They used to be, I think still are, 3 times in a calendar year, 4 times in 2 years, 7 times in your lifetime. Med schools will see every attempt/ score. And, a surprise to most, but results show Humanities majors outperform science majors on every portion of the MCAT, not just the verbal sections. Medical school admissions officers actually weigh the Critical Analysis and Reasoning section the heaviest of the entire MCAT, because they view it as a measure of a student's ability to learn and communicate. Mik being well spoken, deliberate, and poised obviously has that well in hand. Another common misconception is that there is a "passing" score. Although centered around 500, each medical school has their own criteria. Scores have a range of 472-528 (each school has their own "average"), 4 sections with scores of 118-132. But, a lower MCAT total means a student needs a high GPA and extensive research/clinical experience. For example OSHU has an average MCAT of 509/components of 127 or 128, GPA 3.65, personal questionnaire and essays, and heavy requirement on clinical experiences. With a 3% acceptance. Many science geeks get a rude awakening thinking that they are well prepped for the MCAT. Students need to be/have a very well rounded college experience. Interesting info, thank you. I expect the University of California to announce any day that they will no longer use the MCAT.

I knew it was tough, but that 3% acceptance at OHSU is just brutal.

The lowest pick from the 2020 draft to make a roster was Kaila Charles at #23. Sixteen of the first 17 picks made their respective rosters with #11 overall being suspended for the 2020 season by the Seattle Storm.

WNBA doesn't have enough teams... should be 18-20 teams, not just 12.
