While I have not seen any of his games live I have seen him many times over the last 2 years. I do a lot of substitute teaching and have known the family for 15 to 16 years. His dad teaches history at HVHS. I usually have a short conversation with his dad whenever I am teaching there. I have covered PE several times and even played catch with a football with Sam after class. I have not had a long conversation with Sam, only congrats and how do you like the offer. I do know he thinks highly of the offensive coaches at OSU. He carries , I believe, a 4.14 gpa. He is a really good kid and has leadership qualities. He even has got on kids screwing around in PE. The kids respect him. HVHS is down substantially in enrollment but is still a 4A school. This year they bump back up to 4A. They have had 3 consecutive good football classes move up from middle school. Sam's class is the first of the 3.

Grants Pass HS split into three high schools after the 78-79 school year. North Valley was AA and Hidden Valley was AAA. That meant in their initial year they had Medford (before their split a few years later) and Roseburg on the schedule. A small saving grace was Klamath split that same year so Mazama struggled and KU was down. Later in life a colleague of mine was a junior running back at GPHS in 1978. He said his senior year was bad because the best offensive linemen went to North Valley.

6-2, 180. Hit the weight room or maybe hasn't grown into his man's body yet.

Allowed them to still dominate in athletics

I'll only say I watched plenty of 3A football. I saw no one including Sam in the 3A final (they lost to Santiam Christian 41-34) that was a D1 player. His stats are meaningless as 3A football was bad and HV played some very bad teams. Even the championship game was video game stuff. One team couldn't defend the pass, SC, gave up close to 500 yards and won. The other couldn't stop the run, HV, gave up maybe 400 on the ground and lost on the last drive. It's great OSU offered. He is a very good athlete and could truly develop. And, those here say a great kid from a great family. It'd be an awesome story if he became a OSU starter. But, I'd really question the state of the program and QB recruiting if that came to pass. But, hey DA worked out!By "DA," do you mean Derek Anderson? The QB from Scappoose who was recruited by pretty much every school in the nation? A top 50 recruit? That DA? If that is the "DA" you meant, you've blown your credibility by noting that he "worked out."

3A DA comparison most likely. Plus an attempt at a bit of humor. Obviously one isn't quite like the other. I figure most folks got it. I did!

Sam has been bumped to a 3-star, FYI. Thanks, I’ll update the thread title to reflect that. Recruiting rankings are BS. The only reason they changed his rating is because he got a P5 offer.

Every time I see the name "scubasteve" I think of Steve Magness. He ran a 4:01 high school mile in 2003. It was the year after Alan Webb so it didn't make a lot of notoriety. He never progressed much after that and I don't know why. He's a coach for Nike now and also the cross country coach at University of Houston. But he posted a ton on letsrun.com from about 2001 - 2005 under the name scubasteve. He was a typical arrogant kid on the message board. So I'm assuming the current scubasteve is baseba11 not Magness, but I always do a double take.
