The Beavers continue to fill in additional pieces to the 2020 class. The latest commit is Kian Hogan, a 6'1" 167 pound multi-sport athlete from Solana Beach, California and Santa Fe Christian HS. Hogan has been one of the top 3 uncommitted athletes in San Diego County for several months. Hogan is an athletic LHP and center fielder with a good glove, arm and "lots of fast". In football he was their running QB in an option offense. A few years ago their successful FB program was coached by Brian Sipe, a former NFL quarterback. High character kid and excellent student.
I'm unsure what Canham and Company have in mind for Kian but I suspect he'll get a look on the mound before any outfield work takes place. He played as a reserve in 2018, played a full season in 2019, then played only 7 games in 2020 prior to the shutdown. His career stats are a .290 BA, 22 R, 27 RBI, 9 doubles, 3 triples, 1 HR, 18/21 stolen bases, 21 BB, 14 K. His pitching stats are 21 appearances, 74 2/3 IP, 49 H, 32/30 R, 48 BB, 87 K, 9-6 record and ERA of 2.80.
Scouting reports emphasize his natural athleticism, fluid delivery, high 3/4 arm slot (downhill plane), and college potential. They also note some wildness, some lack of command and not fully trusting his "stuff". Definitely a worthwhile development guy is what I interpret. Shows a 3-pitch mix - a heavy high 80's fastball touching 89 frequently. A 72 mph curve ball that needs more consistency, and a 69 mph "tumbler" (change-up).
Hogan becomes the 18th commitment to the class of 2020. I don't expect all 18 to make it on campus this summer or fall. A consensus of opinion is that Mick Abel will turn professional, and there was some information posted about JuCo Catcher Gavin Logan heading home to help his family. The recruitment of Florida prep, Rohan Wright has always been a mystery and I have nothing to assure me that is going to happen this fall.
