A lot of discussion on this board about Wayne Tinkle, but don't really see much regarding the assistants other than Stephen as the dad of the Thompson brothers. One of the key responsibilities of a head coach is putting together a quality staff and to be honest, I'm not sure how good or bad the staff is. Heck, I had to look up the name of the third assistant -- Marlon Stewart.
One thing that Brad Underwood of Illinois (yeah, I'm bringing them up again, but it is the only other school I know a fair amount about) has done right is assemble a great staff. He initially retained one member from the old staff -- Jamall Walker -- who has strong ties to the St. Louis area. He then brought in Ron "Chin" Coleman. Chin had been on several staffs (Colorado St., Bradley, and University of Illinois - Chicago), but the real importance of adding him was he had very strong ties to the Chicago area and one of the best if not the best AAU teams in the city. Orlando Antigua came on as the third assistant, and, admittedly, came with baggage. He was an ace recruiter at Kentucky and known for developing big men before getting the head job at South Florida. His tenure there didn't go well to say the least -- bad record (23-55) and the program was under investigation for academic fraud when he was fired. NCAA found that without OA's knowledge an assistant coach had provided impermissible housing and other benefits estimated to cost between $402 and $511, but no academic fraud. Sticking point is that the assistant was Orlando's brother. Anyway Orlando has brought been crucial in bringing in two top 50 recruits from NY as well as a JC transfer. Chin has also brought in two top 50 recruits from Chicago. This year, Walker was moved into the position of assistant to the head coach, and Stephen Gentry was brought in from Gonzaga where he had been the director of operations. Gentry had been with Underwood before as both an assistant coach and assistant to the HC. His strengths are X and O's and player development.
So what are the roles of the Beavers assistants -- and are they any good at them. I'm assuming Thompson has strong ties to S. Calif and recruits that area. In Rupp's bio, it mentions defense so is that what he concentrates on? Stewart's bio says he was the defensive coordinator and handled international recruiting at his two previous stops. I'm not sure if Rupp or Stewart are any good at recruiting. Like I said, I don't know enough about their abilities or roles to comment on whether they are good or bad, but from face value it is hard to be real confident. I will say though that WT has a lot less money to work with when it comes to assistants. When Underwood was hired the salary pool for assistants was bumped up to $850k compared to somewhere around $535k that WT has. Anyone have any insight into the quality of the staff?
