Number retirement should be limited to players whose careers were so outstanding that they reached their sport's national hall of fame. Mik has had an outstanding career, but not one that is going to get her to that level. Oregon should retire Sabrina's number, but not Ruthie's.
If you didn't have a very high standard like that, you'd have way too many retired. Think back to the UCLA glory days. How many of those guys' numbers would they have had to retire?
Mik will get her spot in the OSU hall of fame one day. That would seem the more appropriate honor.

Rebounds, points, field goal percentage, and wins. Hebard is an UO generational player who was both aided and overshadowed by Ionescu. She deserves to have her number retired.

Syd wore No. 21 as a freshman. So if her number is going to be retired, you'd have to retire two.
Not a big fan of retired numbers.

How many jerseys have been retired? Who else should be?
What is the criteria?
Menken and Ragland are the current two. Ragland is iffy in my book. The problem is that if you retire Pivec, you probably need to retire Sydney and Jamie....then the floodgates may open and you end up looking like the Trailblazers who have about 5 numbers retired that shouldn't be. Kostic should also be retired if you go down that road. Right, Where do you stop?
I like that North Carolina mens basketball has a criteria in regards to honoring players. I also like how the have two categories. A honored jerseys and retired jersey category. What do you think about their criteria and their two categories? I like it.
To have his jersey honored, a player must have met one of the following criteria.
MVP of a National Championship winning team Member of a Gold Medal Winning Olympic Team First- or second-team All America ACC Player of the Year NCAA Tournament MOP
Now that’s to get your jersey honored. To have his jersey retired, a player must win one of the following six widely recognized player of the year awards
Oscar Robertson Trophy, formerly known as the United States Basketball Writers Association National Player of the Year National Association of Basketball Coaches Player of the Year Sporting News Player of the Year John R. Wooden Award Naismith College Player of the Year
Carolina’s Retired Jerseys 23-Michael Jordan 1984 50-Tyler Hansbrough 2009 NC-Jack Cobb 1926 (team’s did not wear jersey #’s in that era) 12-Phil Ford 1978 52-James Worthy 1983 33-Antawn Jamison 1998 10-Lenn Rosenbluth 1957 20-George Glamack 1941

Weisner and Wiese (along w/ Hamblin) completely changed the culture and the trajectory of the program. That is definitely worthy of having their numbers hanging from the rafters IMO. There were a few standout players previously, but who else led them to 3 straight Pac titles and a Final 4? Nobody.
I have no idea how long you're supposed to wait. I thought 5 years was fairly standard, but Iowa just hung Megan Gustafson's jersey less than a year after she completed her career there. If fast tracking is an option, I'm not sure what Washington is waiting for with Plum. As big of a no brainer as ever existed.

Honoring/Retiring... is a great option. And, a school can set its own criteria. Maybe even honoured jersey #s worn could have an extra patch? Extra border around the number? Unique color for the #? Very cool deal and makes the "rafters" a very special honor.

Unless some day the Beavs have 7 or 8 or however many Championships, 20+ Final 4 and multiple National POY. If OSU applied that criteria they probably won't ever retire a jersey. That doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe better recruiting would fix it. You apparently have given up on the future already. It is not suppose to be a yearly event but once a decade honor. Why not?

Carolina is what, one of the top 2 or 3 programs in mbb all time? I just don't see OSU wbb ever standing on that kind of plateau. There's nothing wrong with that. Obviously by definition being at that level is extremely rare company. That's not giving up on the future, that's being realistic.

I think I favor John Wooden's approach: Wooden valued team play over individual accolades, and he opposed retiring numbers. "What about the fellows who wore that number before?" Wooden asked. "Didn't they contribute to the team?" That said, he apparently thought Walton and Alcindor were likely deserving. I think Mik would be more in favor of the Wooden approach as well. I will note that I do NOT think Oregon State will see the likes of Mikela Pivec again any time soon - not just the numbers, but the character and off court accomplishments. It is the across-the-board generational level of student-athlete accomplishment that warrants raising her number into the rafters. And I think that is the sort of "squishy" criteria we might need to apply, and that might lead to a couple of other retirements...... Go Beavers!

Wiese was the leader who won three PAC-12 titles and made a trip to the Final Four. Hamblin and Weisner won two conference titles. Wiese was a four-time All-PAC-12 selection, is the PAC-12 all-time leader in made threes, and is OSU's all-time leader in assists. I think that her OSU jersey will be retired at Gill one day.
