I hadn't really thought about it much, but am really surprised by how many of the NBA All-Stars played out west in college.
Looking at the 2020 Rosters of 25 players, we have:
Pac-12 Harden - ASU Westbrook - UCLA Booker - UW
Western Schools Sabonis - Gonzaga Lillard - Weber State Leonard - SDSU Siakim - NMSU
That's 8 out of 25. Keep in mind a bunch didn't go to college (James, Giannis, Jokic, Doncic). So basically, 1/3rd of the 2020 All-Stars that played college ball played out west.
That just seems like a high number given that a) schools out west would be more like 20% represented in the top 50 (what it's at currently in the NET, and seems typical, and b) no school out west has been getting the top-shelf talent from a rankings standpoint, and hasn't been for a long time.
Also, from 2019, add Thompson - WSU, George - Fresno State, Vucevic - USC
No point to be made, other than surprising that the west seems over-represented in the All Star rosters relative to performance otherwise.

Funny you posted. Just read an article/quiz the other day that goes the other direction. Of the voted Top 50 of all time only 5 from the West: Walton Jabbar Sharman Baylor Russell

From Oakland too so stayed out West. Last thing I saw that ranked top 50 had him around #40.

Devin Booker went to Kentucky, not UW.

Devin Booker went to Kentucky, not UW. Thanks for the correction - man, in my head I’ve thought he was a Husky back in the Tony Wroten days for a long time - no idea how those wires got crossed.

It’s fluid, so considering that he is at #40 right now, someday he most likely will not be. Considering his all-around impact as a scorer, distributor and lockdown defender (some of the strongest hands ever), he will always be in conversations about the greatest all-around point guards to play the game for sure.
