The Doors played at Gill ?? I was the SC game but not old enough to know who the Doors were at that point. One of my top three bands of all time.

At Gill, I heard that Morrison showed up late, and a lot of the audience left early.

Huey Lewis and the News (backed by Tower of Power) in 1985, Tom Petty and the Wallflowers late 90's - Toto for Mom's Weekend (boy was that an expensive programming mistake for OSU, tho I and my wife loved the concert, along with the other three thousand people that showed up). Seems like there is zero enthusiasm for trying to get groups into Gill anymore - pretty sad.

Seems like there is zero enthusiasm for trying to get groups into Gill anymore - pretty sad. Musical entertainment has become prohibitively expensive. Big-name bands are not going to play at Gill when the Rose Garden and TTATT are available for dates in Oregon. Most big-game shows tour in huge arenas. The less popular/solo acts now tour smaller venues, with a lot lower overhead costs and a lot fewer tickets to sell. And the casinos have pretty much killed the county fairs/River Rhythm-level concerts. Even Benton County used to get some decent names in the 1980-1990s but now it's all cover/tribute bands or some country act they took a flier on. Tanya Tucker ain't coming back to the Benton County Fair.

In theatre configuration, Gill can hold 12,000. If they can get 3 Dog Night, Guess Who and the like for the Benton County fair, some decent acts ought to be available.

Why doesn't OSU just renovate Gill like Washington did with its arena a few years back? Or did we already try that?

There is no way you can get 12K into a 9,300-seat building, when having a stage automatically eliminates 1-2 thousand seats because they'd be behind the stage. Nevermind that the fire marshall would never allow it. The groups you mention did play at the BCF, at least 10 years ago. They would be not be affordable today, thanks in a great part to casinos. Why doesn't OSU just renovate Gill like Washington did with its arena a few years back? Or did we already try that?
Just mail in that $30 million check and they'll get right on it.

So we should spend 110 million or thereabouts to shrink Gill's capacity to 7000 seats?

Looks great, but hasn't helped their team win. 6-15 YTD with 4 wins at home. Last year was similarly dreadful. I'm certain the facilities are not the reason why we can't get better than mediocre. It's coaching and recruiting.

WBB needs at least 9,000 seats since it can fill up for women game.
If WBB can be successful, top 10 ranked for last few years, final 4 once, and sweet 16 last few years then MBB can be successful with the right coach.

So we should spend 110 million or thereabouts to shrink Gill's capacity to 7000 seats? Never said that. But someday in the future, something will need to be done with Gill. I merely pointed out that a building with arch suspension construction can be reconfigured inside without disturbing the "bones" of the building. Northwestern added all new dressing rooms, added a huge alumni gathering area with an attached kitchen and dining areas and a new practice facility. Obviously, our needs would be different, thus expenses would be less. An interior renovation would certainly be cheaper than coming up with $200plus million for a new arena.

A couple games get close in "paid attendance", but if the current Gill was remodeled similarly (NW completely redid the bowels and and locker rooms, etc. OSU doesn't need the same amount of work. Hec Ed is a better example) configuration to 8250-8500 could increase ticket prices slightly and cover the very few games that ever reach 9k+. Gill needs a retro fit, but until MBB is up and running to a regular postseason candidate the push will not be there. Football/Reser is the money maker and needs the work... just not sure that $200 mil is necessary to make it a 1st class facility for a program that in all likelihood will never be Top10 on a consistent basis and doesn't have the big single donor?!
