Right now OSUs AD needs to be at least a part time salesman. Barnhart was a salesman decarolis and Barnes were not and are not. Simplistic, but yes. Also simplistic is the fact folks need to quit comparing the past to what is happening currently and what is needed moving forward. Past coaches, record, ADs... utter BS in terms of discussing WT and what has happened in his tenure. Speaking strictly basketball he has done a sub par job in every area... recruiting, scheduling, player development, in-game management, team chemistry, development of on the court leadership, and of course Pac12 success. It's not the AD's fault, it's not Craig Robinson's fault, it's not on the staff, it's not about his personality, it's not about Tres, or Ethan, or Stevie. And... it's not about the academics as any coach at OSU would be held to a certain academic standard and expectations... it's the players doing the work... it the academic staff doing the support. This is purely a here and now head coaching issue. And, the excuses, here and from WT are tiresome. REASONS or RESULTS... all OSU is getting lately is reasons. Whatever opinion you hold why not focus on the here and now... what is the CURRENT state of the program, recruiting, play on the court? Wat is needed going forward? And... for those who think OSU is at some extreme disadvantage and can't do better than WT... well, I feel sorry for your fandom and respect for OSU and it's athletic department. OSU can win in EVERY sport... it can win on a consistent basis. I'm not expecting NY's 6 bowl games or Final Fours, but postseason play should be a regular event... every so often Omaha type seasons. If you do not think that is possible how does it happen in much more obscure schools in various sports? WBB is far more top heavy and OSU has emerged to solidly enter that group. Baseball struggled along until a key group of kids caught fire and OSU was suddenly on the map as a place to play. It can and will happen with the right hire and support. And, right now the salary package for MBB is not an issue. At the 39th highest in the country there are multiple great coaches making less that would love a Pac12 opportunity. And... NO ONE will know the names of interest until there is actually a job open. So, those of you who consistently ask for names... get a clue. But, we do know the name that is not taking OSU to the next level.

But, we do know the name that is not taking OSU to the next level. I agree that we shouldn't use the past as an excuse, but I think we need to really analyze the past and make sure we are not doomed to repeat it. We have sucked for a long time. We have had mediocre to bad men's basketball that has transcended multiple coaches. Why? We do need to fix that. I don't believe it is just bad luck, because if so, that is some pretty s%#tty luck man. We shouldn't tolerate mediocrity, but we need to do our part (we being OSU administration). Lets not pretend like WT was some wildly unqualified coach that we took a big risk on. He was a HC for 8 years, had a 158-89 overall record and 97-39 conference record. He made the Tourney 3 times at Montana... It isn't like Craig Robinson, that had coached for 2 seasons and was 30-28 when we hired him. It isn't like Jay John, never a HC, but a hot assistant under a legendary Lute Olson. WT is more like an Eddie Payne, a coach with good success as an HC, albeit at lower division schools (then). Maybe you can point at Jay John and Robinson and say they were new HCs, unproven and didn't cut it... but oddly no matter who was coaching, records are stunningly similar. We have sucked for 30 years. WT is the best of the lot, as sad as that is, and we aren't turning the corner. This is a year and a roster that we should have it, and yet we don't. What are we missing? what is wrong at OSU?

The league stats essentially say that OSU can't shoot from the outside and can't rebound compared to their peers. The problems are compounded by the fact they take fewer shots in a game than almost all the other PAC-12 teams too. Those are really bad combinations. It all showed up early on against Oklahoma and nothing has changed. It reflects the lack of athleticism on this team...unable to properly box out more athletic players, can't beat teams to the boards, or take anyone off the dribble, or create your own shot, or beat teams down the court on a fastbreak.
I think WT assumed the freshman would step up, especially Lucas, more than they have. But he's given ZR and AH such a long leash, those bench players haven't got a lot of opportunities to gain confidence, no matter how bad AH and ZR play. OSU is essentially starting two players (AH and ZR) that the other team doesn't really even need to guard, and they can focus on helping against Tres and Ethan. After watching this team all season, I realize now they were never really a serious contender for a tourney spot, but the NIT was possible before some really inept performances the past few weeks. I also thought the seasoned starters would pay off in close games and against less experienced teams, that has shown to be untrue as well. I'm optimistic that Lucas, Hunt, and others will make the leap next year and could possibly achieve a .500 record.

My question is...why aren't players getting better? I don't see improvement year to year with our athletes. I don't know if Wayne is a good coach or not...my eyes tell me that this team isn't near as athletic or as well coached as the rest of the Pac-12.
I watched a game a couple of week-ends ago featuring a middle of the road Washington team...a bubble team at best. They were 1000x more athletic than this osu team imo with the exception of a couple players. Athleticism can be overcome with good coaching and execution. We don't have that right now...
I have supported Wayne from day one,but that support is waning. I thought he was a good fit for osu and Corvallis. Some big questions need to be answered after the season pertaining to Wayne's future. What is the direction of this program going forward?

How can they step up when they have clearly been todl to defer to the "stars"? (Seriously a guy used to shooting 30 times a game like Lucas doesn't suddenly stop shooting in games all together unless directed) I'm not optimistic AT ALL for next year, because WT has consistently shown that he is VERY POOR at developing young talent, Alfred Hollin, the guy we can't seem to quit, is prime example #1. And pointing out Drew Eubanks is the exception that proves the rule. Most likely he was just a new to basketball guy who would have made those strides with even the most paltry of coaching. Even the coache's sons haven't gotten better. Tres is the same today as he was as a freshman, in some ways he was BETTER as a freshman, he passed more and seemed better at drawing fouls. His three point shot looked better during teh first month of this season, but has since wilted. Stevie Thompson didn't improve here, Ethan hasn't improved. KK is the same today as theday he stepped on campus, freak athlete who can sky for blocks, but thats it. Honestly, the guy who should be starrng for Portland State, ZR, might be the most improved player of WT's OSU tenure! Sigh

That takes salesmanship to open people's pockets just selling hope... Cameron Indoor is kind of a dump, but Allen Fieldhouse is a palace compared to Gill. However, Duke also has the Michael W. Krzyzewski Center for Athletic Excellence and Trinity House. Kansas has McCarthy Hall. What does Oregon State have that can compete with any of that. It took Casey a long time to turn Oregon State into a National Champion. He had to fundraise to upgrade the field, upgrade Goss Stadium (1999), and add lights (2002). And he had to do most of the upgrade fundraising himself. Recruits did not start to come until the 1999 Goss Stadium upgrade was completed. And what was a big reason that Casey left? It was because Kentucky could dump $50 million into their baseball stadium and Mississippi State could dump $60 million into theirs without batting an eye. Whereas, Casey could not lobby Oregon State to even put an additional $4 million into Goss, even in the midst of consecutive College World Series appearances. The administration, at least historically, is so awful at supporting athletics that only truly elite coaches can be consistently successful. And then, it almost seems like it is in spite of the administration rather than because of it. It took Casey seven years of mediocrity before he started to get all of the pieces together to start putting a team together that could compete in this conference. And Casey's conference record was only one game better after 90 games (excluding the Pac-10 castoffs Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, and Portland State) than Wayne Tinkle's first 90 games in conference. (And roughly 44% of those first 90 games were against baseball lightweights Washington and Washington State.) Casey is a great example of what Oregon State can accomplish, when a great coach with a great vision for a program is given sufficient time with great support. Barnes' support of the football program facilities is great, but what has Barnes done to support the basketball facilities? The end of the post appears to have wandered off topic.

I'll give you WSU after Bobo left as a "lightweight", but UW won the conference 3 years in a row between 1996-1998, including going 20-4 one year. They were not exactly a "lightweight" And the Goss upgrade $$ was not a "big" reason Casey retired. That was a small factor at best.

The Beavers lost the third game in Seattle 3-2, which was the difference between Oregon State winning North, and Washington winning the North. That same 1997 Oregon State team dropped a series to Six-Pac cellar-dwelling California, losing two by a combined fourteen runs. I did not count those three games in the 90 games cited above. Casey was complaining about monetary support at the College World Series in 2018, or so I have heard. He was still talking future then and how hard it was to not fall too far behind. Ultimately, I believe that Casey staying or retiring was on a knife's edge. Every little thing made a difference in the end.

You could argue that he may have been a little burnt out from having to coach and fund raise, but it was his primarily his detailed obsessive like coaching that led him to call it quits.

I agree 100 percent. It's not salary, location, facilities, etc. Those are excuses. Has anyone been to Allen Fieldhouse or Cameron Indoor? They aren't elite facilities. It's about getting talent with the right coaching and direction to succeed. The right coach can succeed in Corvallis. How did Pat Casey or Scott Rueck make osu a powerhouse in their respective sports? Who would have thunk coaches from George Fox would have turned osu into a 3x National champ or a final four team who is capable of getting to a National Title? It can happen in Osu MBB...it just takes the right staff with a plan. Ive read on here that Scott Barnes isn't a salesman. I have heard just the opposite. The proof is in the pudding, but in another sport,I've heard good things about the prospects of the West side Reser expansion, and if that happens,it will have been done with a current losing football program. That takes salesmanship to open people's pockets just selling hope... How long did it take CASEY?? OSU 's first post season appearance under Casey was in Casey's 11th season here according to Wikipedia.
