There are several factors at play in that decision.
A smart move by Dorman and Canham.

There are several factors at play in that decision. A smart move by Dorman and Canham. Let's hear those "factors"/guesses... Maybe OSU simply needs another starter... for a 4 games in 4 days when no one is going deep anyway? Maybe they will experiment with using pitching a staff backwards? Mully is the best option in a young, inexperienced staff? Mully asked and deserved a shot? It's a smart move IF... not sure how that is known at this point??

I love watching Jake pitch and I've often wondered if he would move to being a starter... However, my concerns are as follows. His fastball isn't overwhelming - in a few outings he gets hit hard. Will he be able to make it through the lineup a third time without the other team figuring him out? Who is going to close now? Always makes me nervous. Having a closer with experience and moxy is huge as the tension builds. Who is starting game #1 - Chamberlin? Seems like if you started Jake in Game #1 and he only went 3 innings you could bring him back to close game 4? I can't wait to see these guys playing Baseball.... then we can quit guessing and move to full time complaining an second guessing

I'm thinking Mully asked, and deserved a shot. Somewhere in the back of my mind (not at all interested in searching thru ancient Benny House boards to research it) it seems to me that Mully has, at least once in the past, expressed an interest in starting. As a starter, he surely won't blow it by 'em....but as a true 4th year Senior he definitely deserves a shot - and he just might bring enough guile to the table to succeed.

Not that it makes a difference but Mully said on the podcast that Canham & Dorman came to him to ask if he could start. Maybe that is spin, maybe it isn't. Makes no difference now. He said he has been working on his strength to go 100 pitches. Viva Matt Boyd!

I seem to remember Jake going 7 or 8 innings in a 16 inning game against Utah in 2017 in which he eventually picked up the win. Bottom line is that you can put Jake wherever you want, we've only go 5 returning pitchers without any kind of question mark. We will need three or four freshmen to step up in a big way if the team is to be competitive this year.

Although I remember going into the end of the season without a strong #3 pitcher and suddenly we found Abel and won the whole thing. Going into the season with 5 returning pitchers sounds good to me.
I will miss Jake closing games though. Loved to hear Johnny Cash as he took the mound.

I was just thinking the same thing. Such a unique and great song to walk out to.

He came on after Brandon Eisert gave up a walk in the tenth. Mully stranded the runner on second. Mully looked great the first time through the lineup, retiring all nine in order. He turned that into 13 in order before starting to tire and giving up two walks, a wild pitch, and a hit over the next five hitters. He still looked decent into the 15th before starting to noticeably tire, giving up a solo shot in the 16th to the three-hitter, which put the game in jeopardy. Kwan led off the 16th with a bunt single. After Gretler bunted, Anderson tripled down the line to knot the score at four. Utah then tried to set up a force at all bases by intentionally walking Grenier and Taylor to get to, get this, Rutschman, who had come on in the seventh as a defensive replacement. Rutschman hit a sacrifice fly to bring Anderson home for the game-winner. Mully has shown a couple of times that he can give you a solid 70 pitches in a pinch. If he can go from a consistent 70-pitch to a consistent 100-pitch pitcher, though, and bring up the velocity, great!

The wonderful thing about Mully starting game 2 will be arriving at Surprise Stadium on Feb. 15, at 1 pm MT Time, about an hour before game time, and standing DIRECTLY above the Beav bullpen and watching him warm up for his battle with the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
Will the Bulldogs use their pre-season All-American (3rd Team) Pitcher Alek Jacob, on 2/14 vs. BYU, or save him for their 2nd game of the season, vs. the Beavs?

The Zags were using Jacob more as a starter in 2018. But he only posted four starts in 2019. He started the first two weekends (including losing to Fehmel in the Saturday game in Surprise last year), and a random road game in April. His only other start was a game, where he picked up the save in the morning game and stuck around to start the next game in May. Otherwise, they used him primarily as a reliever. 12 saves last year.
