WBB is outdrawing MBB for the 2nd consecutive season. Here's the delta for MBB-WBB per game attendance:
2015-16, 1900 2016-17, 640 2017-18, 81 2018-19, -277 2019-20, -1438 (prelim)
MBB outdrew WBB by 1900 per game 5 seasons ago and MBB attendance has fallen in relation to WBB attendance since that time. That can happen a few different ways. What are women's basketball attendance numbers in relationship to 5 years ago. Two different ways to be exact. MBB down about 2000 per game, WBB up about 1300 per game.

Winning is fun to watch. It's that simple.

MBB down about 2000 per game, WBB up about 1300 per game. Come on, I can see numerous ways... men attendance slightly down, women's up. Men's attendance static, women's well up. Mens slightly-well up, women's greatly up (not that I think men's has gone up). Men's way down, women's up or static. Men's way down, women's down less... lots of possibilities. Thanks for giving the real numbers. I thought the women might be more than 1300 up though. Unfortunately the men's program isn't performing to the level people are willing to pay a premium for. The women are doing well and the price point is low... good entertainment for a better price, with a very likely win to boot makes for a growing base. I'm not sure how to fix it, if going to the NCAA'S 2 seasons after changing coaches didn't fill Gill every game there's a lot of work for the athletic department to fix it.

Maybe the MBB consumer is a bit smarter than one tourney in year two? Maybe before a coaches own recruits/players are the ones responsible for consistent success. Maybe the AD needs to rethink their stance on pricing and add promotions to help pay for extensions they saw as necessary. Of course maybe what potential fans see for free on TV is all they need to see?

Realistically, how low would the ticket prices have to have been for you to go to that game tonight?
You wouldn’t go for $25, but if it’s $15 you’re hopping in the car and driving from Salem on a weeknight? If it’s $10 now you’re in?
Ticket prices are not unreasonable. The losses are what are keeping people away. Had we swept the Washington schools and potentially been on the verge of being ranked, plenty of people would’ve found a way to get there.

Prices are directly related to product. What are "we", 23 games under .500 now? Prices might not make a huge difference, but MBB isn't marketed as well as WBB. Why? And... why $25-28 for empty seats? I can get extra tix for $6-9 and have people sit anywhere. People like a deal... 4-4-4 for $44, etc. Get 1000 more when your team is mediocre, it's a 1000 potential season tix when you get better... plus their front runner newbie friends. *I don't see front runner as uniquely negative. Fan bases naturally increase with wins.

This may not be the best place to ask this, but I think it loosely relates to Tinkle's inability to put people in the seats. One thing I've never seen (though I might be looking in the wrong place and if I'm would someone let me know) is any type of locker room celebration video after a big win. Illinois social media does a great job of this. Yes, it is a little thing but it is fun and engaging to see these kids and coaches celebrate after a big win. For example, Illinois beat Purdue on the road on Tuesday (first win in Mackey in long time), and the Illini basketball twitter has a little 11 second video of Coach Underwood entering the locker room, pumping his fists and yelling Yeah. They've also posted similar videos of the team celebrating after their Wisconsin road win, and in football you saw them too. With both of those programs rebuilding at Illinois, I find seeing those types of things very fun. I never see anything like this for Beaver basketball or football. Am I just missing them or do they not do this. Seems like after the big Colorado b-ball comeback there had to be some celebrating in the locker room. Seeing a quick video of that can be fun for the fans to see as well as potential recruits. Same thing in football. After Coach Smith's first year, I have to believe there was some celebrating going on after some of the wins this year. With a rebuilding team, showing these simple snippets of success and job can serve to get fans even more excited. Again, maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place for such videos or maybe the athletic department or programs want to maintain a "been here, done that before" stance. And I'm not talking video with production value here. They look like they were shot using handheld digital recorder or possibly even a phone. Maybe it is just me, but I get excited with the Beavs get a big win and its fun to see the team and coaches get excited too. One of the reasons my kids and I prefer the Womens games over the mens, is that win or lose, the girls and coachs STAY ON THE FLOOR and converse and sign autographs with the fans. You should see the stars in my girls' eyes and even my sons when they are standing next to Sydney Wiese or Mikayla Pivec, and it took me 20 minutes to get their jaws off the floor when they stood next to Ruth the Hammer Hamlin and none of them even came up to her arm pits I love that photo! I have NEVER seen the men interact with fans in that way. Yes the winning is also awesome, and the price is awesome, but that fan interaction is what really makes the difference.

Especially for a family of six.... Yes $25 vs $15 makes a big difference. Heck we are also the family that goes to Winco and gets $4 worth of candy from the bins (which if you choose the right kind can be A LOT of candy ) and sticks it in our pockets Weeknights are tough, I will give you that, but I am LOOKING for something fun to go do with the fam on a rainy Saturday or Sunday night... I can swing $64 bucks, and $94 is pretty doable (don't forget the candy! And we park and walk [gotta work off the candy calories ] so no parking fee), but $154 has me looking for other options. I am just as human as the next guy so the odometer flipping over to that next digit really does effect me (even the most hardened, enlightened, economist among us falls for the old 99 vs 100 trick).

Just another example of the extra steps WBB takes. I think MBB has had one postgame autograph session a season. Not sure if it's been every season? And players sit behind tables. To be honest, maybe a 1/4 of the kids fans even went down?!

The men's team started the high 5 line through the student section last year. That of course never worked well though cause students left anyway and clogged up the entire aisle so the players could barely even get through anyway. They did it this year after wins against ISU and UA too, but otherwise you're right there isn't as much going on after the game as WBB.

This is a great comment you made. Thank you! It's gotta be tough on egos to hang out after a losing game, but it would go a long ways over time to build fan support, at least anyone with kids. Even if they could do it after wins it'd be a draw for fans. When it comes to kids, you don't have to always win to still be a hero.

But... it's EVERY game or nothing. Not just wins. Being out there after a loss is even more important for kids... and for players! Good time to reflect that is only a game and how others see you as more than Ws and Ls.
The only time I remember the WBB not doing it was because of the doubleheader.

I agree on these 'little things' making a difference ! There is soooooo much lacking in vision and thought when it comes to sports and our Maketing efforts. I love the idea of a fifth quarter like Wisconsin does for football . Not any athletic activity, but just a chance for the fans to get up close with the athletes and to see a post game show in person. Maybe ask questions, hear a little music, interact with each other - get autographs - make it an experience !
