Was it deCarolis or was it the AD after him? Cuz i remember who ever hired tinkle it was real Quick after we let Coach Robinson go. TOO Quick.. Hired Tinkle in like what? A month or Two after Robinson left? Shoulda spent atleast 3-5 months thoroughly searching for a quality P5 tier marchmadness contending coach. Not some nobody from montana..

Maybe they went quick to increase the chances of a 'package deal' (Tres). In hindsight, was it worth it?
Tinkle, "ranked No. 45 overall in the class of 2015 by ESPN.com, ninth at his listed small forward position. According to rivals.com, he ranked No. 88 overall. He is listed as a four-star recruit on both."

I'm going to comment on the post of BeverNut23 not the current talks of the program. I think we might have forgotten that it wasn't a long line to accept this job let alone show interest. Most of the rumored candidates were in the "I'm not interested club" Enter Tinkle who came from a winning program and culture in Montana. He took the Grizz to the dance 2 out of his last 3 years (2011-12 & 2012-13) & had a 64% winning %'s overall and a 71% in league. He was the 1st Montana coach to take his teams dancin 3 times & 7-8 years a winning season. He never finished below 4th and the last 4 years never below 2nd with winning the league twice. I'm not sure who else we were in line to get? Ben Howland.... naw didn't want it. Bill Grier at San Diego.... nope he turned it down and eventually got canned. Terry Porter....well he wins 28% of his overall games at 11% of league. Lester Conner... degree or no degree, that is the question? What im saying BeaverNut23 is that I respect your opinion but the lists of candidates were SLIM! If you look at the candidates listed I sure could argue that Tinkle was the best of those. ...and that's from all reports that these candidates were even truly interested.

BeaverNut23, this all happened in MAY. There was nothing about this that was quick. Robinson was fired late, well after the season ended. Tinkle was hired well after the traditional time new coaching staffs come in. DeCarolis hired him, and if you’d spent even 60 seconds googling “Wayne Tinkle hired” you’d have had your answers.
Tinkle had a great track record, better than some names some posters are throwing out now. We had just fired the President’s high profile brother in law, who didn’t have a losing season. There apparently were a lot of “no thank you” responses to hiring inquiries. We were lucky to get a coach with Tinkle’s resume at the time.

No idea if he'd have taken it, but obviously would have been a great choice.

Supposedly wanted about twice the amount we were willing to pay.

Nobody?? sheez, a nobody would be nutjob23 I think. There wasn't a standing room line trying to get here IIRC. I have no issue with him getting hired, he has more class than the average coach, results not withstanding. I agree that the measuring stick seems to be stuck at average mid level program, that is an issue. I'm guessing he gets one more year to improve or gets the boot, and I'm not seeing the recruits necessary to improve, OR even stay where they are, good luck to us all.....If that happens, I would hope the new whomever has the class that WT has shown, and is a good image for the school, unlike DA down the road who will bring in pretty much anything, or anybody, he can get by with to win....

By the way, Howland is at Mississippi St and is in his 5th year with 1 Tourney appearance, 1 NIT has won 58% of his games & 44% in league. Thats not twice as much of production

Robinson and his staff were given the vote of confidence by the AD at the end of the season. A month later he and his staff were let go. The assistant coaches were really mad because they were whipsawed by Bobby D and made it difficult to get into the hiring cycle so late in the process. They took their gripes to the president, who agreed with them that this was not the way to treat OSU employees.
Howland wanted the OSU job but we hired Tinkle instead. Howland was out of work for a season before Mississippi State hired him. He took over a program that had only experienced modest success and had never had the historical success of OSU. He is doing a good job and has the program on an upward progression with an NIT and an NCAA appearance so far in five seasons. He and Tinkle are earning about the same salary.

The story Howland wanted double the salary was and is false! He very much wanted to be on the West Coast and in the Pac12. I am not sure of the true defining moment in the hiring process, but Howland was not seen as "personable", but folks from the AD said in no way was he the arrogant arse he is painted to be. His recruiting and success so far in a very deep 14 team conference is impressive for a school without much of a hoop pedigree.
