You know, I've been wondering if GA's tenure actually hurt the rest of the department (specifically men's BB) to some extent. I figured it was largely a money thing, but perhaps it hit recruiting as well? It seems logical. I was just reading about how Oregon recruited Pritchard, and it was mentioned several times. Pritchard mentioned coming to football games as part of his recruiting. It may play a small part at best. Duke football rules!

That was the point that was brought up. Duke has an infinite number of other advantages that make whatever state their football program is in irrelevant. Same with Kansas, UK, Villanova, etc. Just didn't seem like there was much of a point to be comparing OSU to Duke in that regard.
Jury's out in my opinion on if the lack of football success has affected basketball recruiting here negatively. It can't have helped that's for sure, from a financial perspective especially.

Funny... Bama, Clemson, plus many others don't have great hoops/recruiting success.
Coaches and staff who can recruit make difference not a football game.
Is this a new WT excuse... it's GAG's fault?

Well, weren’t we the 6th winningest program of all time? What did that get us? The poster tried to say that if our football program was good, that we would have better basketball recruits. If that’s true, with the improvement in Kentucky football, they are going to get 1st round NBA hall of fame recruits now. Scary. Financial impact is a different story, but I don’t think BB recruits are signing because schools have good football programs.

I was not intending to say if our football program was good we'd get better recruits, just wondering if the overall appeal of our athletic program is worse if our major programs are struggling. Kinda the same thing but not exactly. My assumption is that IF the football program is going gangbusters and adding additional $ to the athletic department's coffers and additional excitement for the university's brand it could help all programs - a rising tide lifts all boats - we haven't had a consistent rising tide in all cases and football is the most visible of our programs. If the basketball team can make post season a couple years in a row that would probably be the best recruiting boost we could get. I'm crossing my fingers for this season still.

Obviously, we just need more strip clubs in Corvallis. Recruiting problem solved.

If Tinkle had Payton Pritchard on the floor wearing Orange he would look like a lot better coach than he does today. His primary failings are in his recruiting success, or lack of. We've not had a "give me the ball I'm going to win this damn game for us" player since Gary Payton. I can not remember, did we even recruit the kid from West Linn? West Linn is duck heaven, no need to recruit him, there was no way to get him to Corvallis( I have no idea if we did or didn't). Have we had any kids from there in any sport? Maybe, but we have friends from there and that seems to be the vibe in West Linn today in their opinion... I met Payton in the men’s practice facility, Coach Robinson introduced us during a break in the workout. There was interest but soon there after he committed to Oklahoma followed by flipping to whoregon. There was interest from our side, none from his team.
