No two ways about it, the Beavs are now headed into a stretch in their schedule where National and Pac-12 standings are on the line.
In a brutal 16 day stretch from January 10 – 26 the Beavs face Arizona and ASU in the desert, Stanford at Gill, and Oregon twice in a home–and-home slugfest – the outcome will stack the deck for this year’s Pac-12 championship race.
And all this in January….
Are the Beavs ready for this pressure packed string of powerhouse games? After all, the first-year players have played only two conference games to prepare them for five games where every opponent they face is better than any they've played against thus far this year. (Yes, ASU at Tempe is tougher than a worn out Missouri State at Gill, or an over-rated Miami at Miami.)
I don’t know how many top four teams the Beavs have beaten during Rueck’s tenure at OSU, but they’re gonna get three chances during that 16-day run. If they go 0-3 they’re pretty much locked into 3rd or 4th place for the 2019/20 season. If they go 3-0 they’re the heads-on favourite to win the conference. Anything else is too precarious to even venture a guess.
How well do the Beavs stack up for this 16-day marathon? Hard to say. But I would say that most Beaver fans believe that the absolute best case scenario would be a sweep in the desert, a win at Gill against Stanford and a split with the Ducks…In a make believe world with Basketball Gods I think Rueck would take this quicker than a Kat Tudor three.
A not so best case scenario would see a Beaver sweep in the desert, a win at Gill over the Cards, and o-fer against the Ducks…I would imagine that, right now, quite a few basketball fans see this as a likely outcome in this five game set.
An even worse outcome would be a desert sweep and a trifecta loss to Cards and Ducks…That would pretty much leave the Beavs in 3rd place with schedule-enhanced UCLA in very good shape to knock them into 4th.
An even worse outcome….oh no, I’m not going there…too scary.
The thing is, after the whole 16-day shootin’ match it’s still gonna be January. And that’s nothing compared to the fireworks in March !!
But you gotta agree with one thing - it’s one helluva January ride for women basketball….
GO BEAVS !!
