It's called a "free" throw!

Hopefully Kat gets her three pointer back. It’s been rough the past few games. A couple not even close tonight. I went to college to play baseball and my second year I played basketball as well. After missing a year it took me half the season to get my shot back to where it was at the end of my senior season in high school.

Not a TOP 10 Team performance. Too many unforced turnovers. Appeared that Rueck really had his team working on high pick, guard penetration, and feeding the post. Definitely appeared the Beavers were using this game to work on executing certain offensive and defensive objectives. On defense, OSU's 3/4 press was ineffective, and, vs a really good team, OSU would have given up a number of lay-ups. I hope we don't make that a staple of our defensive strategy. OSU gave up a lot of uncontested shots, and fortunate that the team they were playing didn't convert more of them.
OSU still won by 29, and Destiny and Mikayla were again amazing. Destiny has really taken her game to another level. Taylor and Kennedy were again very good, just had some freshman moments, which is completely understandable. It is easy to see where Taya would've been such a stabilizing influence in the rotation (free throws for example). It was one of those games where OSU never had one of those stretches where we "blitzed" the other team, and forced a time-out. Very happy with our team, and how they are progressing. Hope the games in Maui are streamed.

I'm glad to see this pointed out here on the board...With a team loaded with shooters it would be easy (very easy) for a coach to let his good shooters bomb away because most of the time it yields good results....Forcing his players to run their dribble penetration plays time after time after time can disrupt the flow of the game, increase turnovers, and take away from the 3 point game....but it must be done - and it must be done in December.....
One of the many impressive things about Rueck is that he uses games against weaker teams to refine and improve his offensive sets.....He knows crunch time is getting here and when it does he wants his offence running right....
In less than a month the Arizona trip will be completed, and Coach knows he cannot take a couple of road losses (or even one) at the beginning of the season if this year's team is going to make a run for the Pac Championship - or a 1 or 2 Tourney seed... GO BEAVS !!

Destiny's effectiveness has risen to a new level with two bigs who can catch and convert her passes and dish-offs inside consistently.

Another bright spot was holding their leading scorer to 1-16 from the field.
Jones had a really solid game. She rebounded well and finished like she usually does. She had been doing pretty well on her free throws, but struggled from the line tonight. It seems like until Jelena gets back, coach is rolling with the rotation of Maddie, Taylor, and Kennedy at the 4/5 spots. I really hope Jelena can crack the rotation when she gets back. She will be a huge asset.
Destiny and Mik were rock solid. I really, really hope Destiny comes back next year. She just has that ability to break down the defense that we haven't seen, and now her ability to do it under control has really been special. Her growth has bee noticeable.
Not Kat and Aleah's best games. Aleah was struggling some to take care of the ball, and both seemed to be off on their shooting. Those two shooting the ball well will be key when we get into Pac-12 games. We'll need them to be solid, consistent threats.

Goodman 1 - 6 from 3, Tudor 1 - 5 from 3 - combined 2 for 11. Yeh, they pretty much were off in their shooting.... I haven't seen the game yet, so don't know what factors were involved....If any...
I'm glad to see different people here on the board comment on Destiny's overall improvement....As everyone knows, she's vital to this team's Big Time success. As beaverwbb fan points out she can break down a defence in devastating style. She and Mik are the only players on the team who can do this with any consistency....
Good to see Jones continue to deliver.....I don't like to oversimplify the game, but after 9 games it now seems crystal clear that the Beavs absolutely need Jones to deliver strong games against the best teams to finish in the top 2 in the Pac....With Taya out for the season, Mik & Jones are the only game in-game out rebounders on the roster. This is no small matter against Stanford and Oregon.
At any rate, the Beavs remain undefeated and they most likely will remain so until they travel to Arizona in early January - where the Pac will probably see the first sell out crowds of the season....And also the Pac will learn a good deal about how real the Wildcats are after they face the Oregon schools on the same weekend.... GO BEAVS !!

Destiny's effectiveness has risen to a new level with two bigs who can catch and convert her passes and dish-offs inside consistently. Agreed. In addition, she is shooting better than ever before. She is currently shooting better than 50% from the floor (great for a guard), 40% from distance, and 80% from the line. Not a lot of players in the country can do that regardless of the competition. Watch her in warmups. She displays lots of confidence in her three-point shooting and it has carried over to the games. Don't want to jinx her, but you have to like what she has done so far this season with respect to her shooting.

I was at the game and it seemed to me like many, if not most, of the TO’s were due to bad passes... a combination of lazy passes and just poor decisions. To me, this is certainly one of the key areas for improvement. Scott must have a passing drill that he runs in practices that would facilitate this and, if so, I think it would be good to incorporate it into the warm-ups. As it is, I see them practicing their zone and that drill allows for lazy passes (focusing only upon proper movement of the defensive player).

It looked like a typical game against an overmatched opponent . . . USU was hyperaggressive on D and the refs were inconsistent. Destiny and Mik handle that sort of slop really well. Aleah and Kat struggle a little more. Usually in these sorts of games, the other team racks up so many fouls in the early game that they have to back off and we bury them in the second/third quarters. This time, though, the refs let a lot go early and never really asserted themselves.
There were some lazy passes, too. Very frustrating, but most of them came when 1) we were up by 20+ and 2) the USU defense made a change. It wasn't so much that the passes were lazy as the defense-recognition was slow.

Chris Dudley’s daughter Emma. USU FT % .750 (3/4) small sample size
Her dad’s NBA FT % .458 (691/1508) large sample size

A lot of crosscourt passes that spent a lot of time in the air. Is it my bias or does this team make more one-handed pass turnovers than other top women's teams? There is a time and place for one-handed passes, but we seem to have players who use only one hand when passing when it isn't necessary.

Goodman 1 - 6 from 3, Tudor 1 - 5 from 3 - combined 2-11. A bit unusual for two of the best three-point shooters in school history to be so off their games from distance on the same night. It does happen to every team on occasion. Their teammates penetrated and gave both of them good looks last night. Their shots just didn't fall. Thankfully, if that should happen again, they have Jones, Slocum, and Pivec typically shooting well within the arc to provide scoring. Slocum's all-around shooting accuracy has been pretty solid throughout this 9-0 start. We must avoid a 2/22 shooting night from distance like we had against Louisville in the Sweet Sixteen last season to win the big games against the top teams. This year's team has a few drivers and mid-range shooters to help offset brief shooting slumps from our top three-point snipers.

Yes, the cross court, or skip, passes were telegraphed so openly that a fan could have left the third row - at the other end of the court, and had the steal. On the positive side, all of the other passing seemed to be clicking. I was really focusing on defense last night, and I liked the starters approach. The speed, on the guard side, with Destiny and Mikayla is invaluable for getting back down the floor to stop both the fast breaks and quick open shots. Seems to also play well in half court press situations. Then, the length comes into play as both Brown and Jones take up a lot of physical space in drying passes, and defensive rebounding. There are not too many uncontested shots. What really impressed me the most was the hand coordination and strength, on some very tight and hot passes, as well as protection of the ball when in our possession. When coming to the ball - they position their bodies to block out the defenders angle. To echo above though, the free throws and some high risk passing will need some practice time. Also, although the officiating was sloppy, both Brown and Jones got whistled too often.
