I will say this. I know a lot of 'women' that refer to themselves, or their group of friends as girls. Usually they say "girls night out", or "I'm going to visit the girls". I have no idea what college age sports teams want to be referred as, but it's very likely they want to be known as women, and 10 years from now they may want to be called girls. What do I know? Not much, but as you get older, you want to be younger.
Funniest thing just happened. While typing this, I just heard one of our AP ladies-women-girl at work on the phone. She's 50someting years old, but I just heard her say "girl power" on the phone with a vendor. I guess we should just all try to be respectful, but we're not going to be right all the time.

Why do some people say the "The girls" play today and if it is men's basketball they say "the men" play today? Even I find myself saying that. Is that a fault of mine? Should I be saying "The women" play today? Am I disrespectful out of bad habits? I don't intend to be. Yes, it is disrespectful. If you would not say "the boys play today" when referring to a college team, you probably should not say "the girls play today" when referring to a college team.
It bugs me when the OSU baseball team is called collectively "boys". They are men. The women's basketball team are women. Both teams consist of athletes who have accomplished more so far in their lifetimes than I ever will. They have earned the respect of fans.
All we can do as individuals is catch ourselves when we use language we don't mean and correct our statements.
Hogwash! References to groups of adults, frequently grouped as sports teams, as 'boys' or 'girls' have existed for much longer than I've been alive. At the end of World War I, did the nation not want to 'bring the boys back home'? When asked what they discussed together, will not even gray haired women frequently respond, "Oh, it was just girl talk"? I've heard many a football team referred to as 'the boys', and, by the way, is not one of those teams the Dallas Cowboys? Are there not cowgirls? Your problem is not that you are being unintentionally disrespectful; your problem is that you have bought into all this absolute nonsense enough to even consider that you might be disrespectful.

Seems to me that team members often refer to themselves as “girls” in the same way that men’s team members refer to themselves as “guys”. For instance, from the recent Taylor Jones article in the GT: “Something that's going to be hard is playing against a much bigger girl, probably built like me, and having to battle against her,” she said. “I think that'll be a good challenge and I'm excited to play against a player like that.”

One thing not mentioned on this thread is the fact that the women's teams are just Beavers, not Lady Beavers, Beavets or some other stupid name. Just Beavers both women and men.

This thread started with; "With Taya out for the season it will be interesting to see how Coach adapts to her absence" Not sure how or why it ended up being an argument over language. But people here do love to argue.

I've said boy, guys, men's etc. and I have said girls, ladies, women - face it, at my age if they are younger than my sons, they are all kids! Either way, go Beavs and next person up!

I actually like referring to them as the Lady Beavs. I know it irritates some of you so I refrain to use it on this board but in my “real” life I call them the Lady Beavs all the time. Similar to the Lady Vols of Tennessee. Go Beavs!!

Were those references in cave paintings?

On the other hand - -here is a recent headline from the Pac 12 WBB website, the article is written by female analyst.
Michelle Smith WBB Notebook: "Meet the Pac-12 Freshmen making an impact" By Michelle Smith, Pac-12 Conference
So, obviously there remains mainstream usage of "freshmen" or "freshman" when referring to female athletes.....
Thought I'd pass this along even though I'd guess we're all pretty much tired this topic.... GO BEAVS !!
