Against lesser foes earlier in the year. We just played a top-20 team? But a lesser top-20 team.

Against lesser foes earlier in the year. We just played a top-20 team? Who was obviously, ridiculously overmatched size wise. It was almost silly to watch how much bigger OSU was. She's talented, but that's not how it will be when it Pac12 play starts. And, as witnessed, footspeed vs a quick, even smaller big will cause her problems. Both of the bigs are not going to get away with blocking shots from behind on a consistent basis.

While DePaul wasn’t a team that could really test our bigs physically, they did aggressively front and Jones did a nice job providing a target over the top. Larger defenders will probably not front and instead push them off their spots from behind. We need our bigs to develop against both approaches. The backside help was often late as well by DePaul, and I want to see Jones be able to release to the back-side help defender’s player for easy buckets - DePaul hardly forced that action, but we will see that as well.
So this may not translate vs other ranked teams, but they certainly get credit for taking what the defense gives them. I look forward to seeing Jones go against a physical equal. She was overmatched against team USA, but still had her moments - I suspect she will pleasantly surprise. Her biggest weakness so far is when she hasn’t to guard much quicker Players - and these tend to also be much smaller. Fortunately, we are deep enough to change lineups for this situation.

Well, what I am heartened by is the spectrum of talent we have on hand seems to have grown:
- we have talented but young bigs, who might be quick, might not, might get pushed off the block, might not contend well with Pac-12 bigs.....won't know for a while, but the results they are turning in at present is certainly heartening. I don't recall many 20 point / 8-10 rebound games early in Ruth, Marie's or Jo's careers, so we have reason to be optimistic. - we have slashers that are well thought of and have delivered evidence they can be effective against Pac-12 level play - we have outside bombers who are among the best 3-point shooters we have ever seen (last night we were able to trot out the best and second best career three point shooters in OSU history, and Jamie and Syd were no slouches in that department) - we have proven coaching to make tasteful combinations of the inside/outside game.
So, the results so far are very encouraging to me. Depaul might have been overrated, but we handled them. Pacific might have been underrated, but we handled them. I suspect we will handle plenty of teams this season. And we will be plenty challenged by teams this season. And that's why I have season tickets :-).
Go Beavers!

We all have our opinions. Mine is that Depaul is a good team. Actually, I really like their team. If they had a shooter like McDavid from Pacific, that would have been a tough game. They didn't have any 'bigs' so there wasn't really a test for our bigs, but we are getting a little taste of the talent of our freshman. They aren't going to play like seniors, but they are going to hold their own, and even out play some/many of our opponents, and others they may struggle against. The Beavs have the experience to work around much of those times when the freshmen are struggling.

We just played a top-20 team? DePaul isn't anywhere close to having the talent of the Pac-12. DePaul advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 (and then I quit looking). So unless it forgot how to coach, recruit and play in the last seven months, it certainly has Pac-12-level talent.

Good post coaches always teach your posts not to lower the ball or they will get stripped. She’s a smart fundamental lady for so young. Hope she learns not to back down when refs on the road in pack 12 games become prone to play favorites.

its weird though. She like just stands there, catches it, and makes it. I LOVE IT. She has soft hands and long arms. But moving athletically with both arms straight up requires very good balance with your legs, hips and feet because the stabilizing function of the arms is minimized. For example, if you were on an icy sidewalk, would you want to walk with both arms straight in the air? Just by way of saying that Ms Jones' ability to do what she does while keeping that ball that high isn't necessarily as simple as it might look.

It's her core strength that allows her to do that. She has strong thighs, glutes and abominable muscles. So far she appears to have reasonably quick feet that provide a solid base.

Against lesser foes earlier in the year. We just played a top-20 team? The criteria for Jones and other players is not how good collectively a team is , but how good the individual player they are matched up with in each game is. I don't believe that Oregon St has ever had highly rated or posts as developed as this group come in as freshman players. Jones was rated even higher than Brown before her junior year injury dropped her down. A junior year injury seems to have the worst negative effect on a player in respect to ratings. It not only knocks them out that year but the next year is spent mostly getting back in sync. It is also mostly about match ups. Some players match up better than others. Remember what McDavid did to Oregon St. freshman posts. They will get better, but they have to face those type of players to learn how to adjust. You can not adjust to what you have never faced before. The good part is that this team has so many posts that they might be able to bring out any type of player to match up with any sort of situation.

It doesn’t look like she is doing much, but if it was as easy as she makes it look, every post player in the country could do it, and that isn’t the case. She seems to always put herself in the “gap” or open spot (especially on fast breaks), she gets up and down the court effortlessly, and does a great job of anticipating rebounds. As she begins to develop a face up game and expand her back to the basket game, she is going to be very tough to stop.
