"This group has all the things in place for greatness" SR How excited should us fans be about the upcoming season? I'm not sure I have ever heard SR speak so glowingly about one of his teams, but maybe I am wrong.
Last year, I was one of the guys on this board that openly admitted I thought the team may lose 6 Pac-12 games. They did better than my fears. This year, there is no doubt in my mind that this team is better than last season. They may not end up with a better Pac-12 record. That remains to be seen, but I do firmly believe they are a better team.
What was Jo's career high? Was it 16 points? Taylor leads the team in the first exhibition with 27 points and a bundle of rebounds and blocks. Kennedy shows she is a versatile player. You've got tons of experience, with two of the best guards in the nation. Kat Tudor returns! Did you say 3pt shooting? Got it covered. Rebounding, yep! Ballhandling, passing, basketball smarts, they are all there. How excited should we be? If SR is that big of a believer (listen to his linked comments), how big should us fans believe? Asking for a friend...

This is definitely a better team at this point than last year. In my opinion this is the best team to start a season in the Rueck era and probably ever for OSU.

Hmmmm. Is it better than our Final Four team?
Jamie Weisner (Sr) Ruth Hamblin (Sr) Syd Weise (Jr) Devin Hunter (Sr) Gabby Hanson (Jr) Sam Siegner (Sr) Katie McWilliams (Fr) and a few others.
Let's see . . . Jamie vs Mik. That's a close one. Junior Syd vs. Destiny. That's pretty close, too. Devin vs. Taya, Kennedy. Another close one, but Kennedy has sooo much potential. Aleah vs. Gabby. Love Gabby's D, but Aleah is better all-around. Katie vs. Kat. That's *freshman* Katie. Kat's better. Ruth and Sam vs. Taylor, Trish, Jelena. The new girls have promise. But they ain't Ruth. Not yet. Bre, Jen'von'ta, Marie vs. Janessa, Maddie, Jas. No question, today's group is far deeper.
I'd say that 2019-20 is just a shade better than 2015-16 *right now*, with the potential to be significantly better if the new gals develop like we expect.

Certainly exciting potential for this season. What I'd like to see is the team playing their best in March. Last year kinda fell off a cliff after the series of home wins over Oregon and the LA schools. Road trip to Arizona schools, Pac 12 tourney and NCAA Tourney, the team was not playing close to optimum capability. Wiese's Sr. year the NCAA Tourney performance wasn't great either.

They couldn't hit their three pt shots. In their last three games they were 9-50 on three's thats less than 20 %. In their last game they were 2-22. Combine that with not being able to score in the paint and you have no chance. The same issue killed the team Wiese's Sr year. During the NCAA's Wieses 3 point shot abandoned her. In her last game she was 0-10. I don't think that that will be a problem this season. They will have enough post up players to score from in the paint. They have to move the ball around and not rely on individual players to carry the team. Any player can have their shot abandon them at any time. That is why ball movement is important. Especially in the NCAA's where it is one loss and your out. Oregon was the better team when they played Florida St. They just didn't move the ball well enough to get players open looks. Having more than one really tall player will make a huge difference because they will have no problem getting the ball into a post player. They can just pass it back and forth until one is open. Passing into the low post is the hardest pass to make and that is what the guards had problems with last season. I did see Mannen make a really nice lob pass into the post in the Union highlights. With the different types of players they have on the roster they will be able to match up with about any team. They can play their small line up--- that would be with Jones at center. That is one heck of a small line up when you have a shot blocking 6'4" center with her reach. Even the other midget center Brown at 6'6" can play defense against big center in college. She shut down the 6'5" wide body who was killing everyone else during the Jordan Classic All Star game. She will not play center but she could if she had too. I think if the ever get Jelena up to speed and on the floor the Beav's could dominate the paint against any team. I certainly can see the potential and why Scott is so excited. I also do not believe with this roster that they will have to worry about anyone fouling out. The have plenty of depth everywhere.

That 2016 team was amazing, but I always feared a bad matchup in then post season after seeing them get rolled by UCLA and Stanford. And there was really no hope that team would hang with UConn in the tourney. I felt more comfortable in many ways about the 2018 team. Then 2020 team does feel like it could be the most difficult one to solve of any team we’ve had. Of course, they have to get there.

How anyone can compare an ACTUAL Final 4 team to one with zero experience in the post, no regular season wins, no Pac12 titles??
Absolutely amazing... really? Complete and utter speculation and a huge amount if maybes to an actual team that made it to the promised land.
As someone wise once said, "... potential means you ain't done nothing yet."

Complete and utter speculation and a huge amount if maybes to an actual team that made it to the promised land. As someone wise once said, "... potential means you ain't done nothing yet." The 2016 team won the PAC-12 regular season and tournament championships. Had both the PAC-12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year (the 2017 DPOY as well). Also both the All-time PAC-12 leaders in blocked shots and 3-point shots made. The 2016 team made the National Final Four and finished the season ranked Number 2 in the final coaches poll. Pretty much just one way for the 2020 team to surpass 2016. I’m looking forward to this season with high hopes.

baseball1111, maybe the only flaw in your argument is the "zero experience in the post" comment. Maddie started numerous games playing as/against the post last year, and Patricia played limited minutes, but important minutes in some big games. It doesn't quite add up to zero in my addition, but perhaps math remains my poor subject.
Considering this team returns Mik, Destiny, Kat, Taya, and Maddie with starting experience and the sixth player of the year winner in Aleah, it's pretty obvious what this team has to start the season with (even without freshman), so comparisons to other teams seems fair game. To say they compare favorably to a final four team may be considered a stretch, yet SR comments the sky is the limit with this team, and hasn't talked down a final four appearance even when questioned about it. Early signs point to an upgrade to both talent and depth in the 'big' or 'post' positions, despite not playing 'real' competition yet. We'll find out soon.

I recall Rueck used similar language at the start of the the 2015-16 season, as far as the team being "on a mission" and "no ceiling", etc. This, recall, was after getting beat at home by Gonzaga in the previous season's Round of 32. They came back as a senior and junior heavy team, with lots of pre-season expectations. So he's used that language before, with good reason as it turned out.
The Final Four team, with the Pac-12 POY and Defensive POY... winning the regular conference, Pac-12 tourney, and finally losing to the eventual National Champion (and arguably the best college women's team ever) in the Final Four is clearly the best Rueck OSU team to hit the court. No question. This year's version definitely is an upgrade over the '18/19 squad, but I'm not reading too much into an easy win at home over a DII team. Let's see what they do in the WNIT and preconference. But...it will be interesting to see if potential gets realized. I would like to see them take advantage of having a player like Pivec on the roster before she moves on.

Ranked #6 in the preseason means external observers think highly of this team's potential, and we are not just all breathing each other's exhaust fumes. The back court has grown and developed into one that should be able to hold its own with any in the country. Our front court has some experience returning, with incredibly talented newcomers of differing talent and size that rivals any other Top-10 teams in the country. Our coaching has been acknowledged as superior as well, again, comparable to top 10 teams. Our home court advantage is right there with the best teams as well.
Given all of that, I think if we are not one of the last 16 teams playing in March the season has been a letdown. Our preseason ranking would say we should be one of the last 8. Our coaches comments indicate Final 4. And since it is pre-season, we are 0-0, and I have irrational exuberance, I expect us to be cutting down the nets in the Big Easy on National Television in 2020 :-).
In all seriousness, one reason to bypass thoughts of Kat and Jelena as redshirts would be to take stock of how things are lining up for us to make a run that only comes around every so often.......
Exciting times. Go Beavers!

Ok... imho.. zero championship caliber experience in the post. MW and JT have been wonderful reps of this program, but are not the inside presence that'll get you a top 3-4 Pac12 finish, let alone Final Four. As we've witnessed, great G/W play only carries you so far.

There is nothing baseba1111 hates more than the thought that someone, somewhere is happy with the state of any OSU sport.
