Final FourCORVALLIS – Scott Rueck isn’t stumped by the question, but he does take a moment to ponder for the right answer. Can Oregon State women’s basketball make a run at the 2020 Final Four? The Beavers coach stops and says “hmmm” a couple times. “Well,” Reuck says, pausing, and adds, “I’m not sure why we couldn’t. I’m trying to think of a reason why we couldn’t, and I can’t think of one. That’s their expectation in the locker room.”

As he did in Italy, he plans on using Janessa as a small forward this year -- he praises her defensive ability. Excited to see what she brings to the team from that position. Also plans on swtiching Taya to the three on occasion.

A front line of 6'6" Kennedy Brown, 6'4" Taylor Jones, and 6'3" Taya Corosdale may be long enough and mobile enough to use against certain PAC-12 line-ups for limited minutes. Allowing Corosdale to play the 3 will give opposing defenses something to have to scheme against, especially if she can return to hitting her threes like she did as a freshman. If Thropay can remain healthy, I also look forward to seeing what she may be able to bring to the Beavs with her physicality and toughness.

The tone Coach exuded in this interview was definitely very upbeat and positive....He continues to be truly positive about the right-now importance of Brown & Jones..Not next year, right now.....It seems to me like he wants to shout: "They're gonna be frikken' awesome," but there is no way Rueck does that....
He claims that Slocum & Pivec will both be slightly better versions of themselves this season, and that is great news....He did not offer much information about Trish Morris and her development, but I'm still holding out that she will have a strong year and an explosive one as a Junior....
Coach claims he doesn't know exactly how Kat Tudor is coming along from her season-ending injury last January, but, to tell the truth, I totally doubt that. But he has said nothing to dampen our expectations in her regard, so I see that as a very good sign...He's protective of his players and it would be unfair of him to raise expectations when there is a chance she's not totally back together.
With Tudor, Pivec, Goodman and Slocum Coach Rueck has the best 4 guards on one team in America (WBB) and he knows it...Using all four of them to full effectiveness while at the same time bringing along Jones & Brown in the post will be an absolute test of his coaching prowess.
He continues to say nothing memorable about Helena Mitrovic....He certainly is not building any expectations around her (in contrast to Jones & Brown about whom he has elevated expectations every time he is interviewed)....So we'll have to wait and see what the deal is with her.
At any rate, in this interview coach was about as boastful - let's say optimistic - as he has been in a long, long time..... He's got a bunch of really good players and he wants to mold them into champions. Sounds to me like he thinks he can..... GO BEAVS !!

If Scott and coaches upgrade Jelena to the same level as Gulich and Ruthie, we all have something to look forward to. My guess is that she is not American style inside and prefers to shoot long two’s or three’s, and may not be that proficient with that shot selection. Both Marie and Ruth were great at drifting down into the key and receiving the lob pass for an easier look and score. We certainly had nothing like that last year, except for Maddie’s improved play in short spurts. Brown seems to possess the same ability as both Ruth and Marie, and earlier in her career. So, I think we( in spite of AA missing and Jelena as a question mark ), will be way ahead of where we were last year - starting with game 1. Just Pivec and Slocum are an upgrade because they are a year older. I, personally, prefer a Morris / Corosdale set up to Fill the forward positions and rotating Thropay and Jones into the action. I just want us to DESTROY the sucks and that crooked program along the way.

Jelena is HUGE. She looks like a giant even next to Kennedy and Trish. I'm really excited to see what she ends up bringing to the table. I think she'll give us that physically dominating post presence that we had in Ruth, but I think she comes in with a more polished, diverse skill set. I think she'll give us a few 15 point/15 rebound games in her time in Corvallis. Remember this is a player who averaged nearly 20 PPG and 15 RPG in Serbia's top league (which is recognize is not the Pac-12).

"Coach claims he doesn't know exactly how Kat Tudor is coming along from her season-ending injury last January, but, to tell the truth, I totally doubt that." The State of Oregon has some bad history on coaches pushing their players into playing when they shouldn't be. I have no inside knowledge about it but everything I've seen Rueck say is that he will just wait for the medical staff/players to tell him they are ready to play and take it from there. I'm all for that.

"Jelena is HUGE. She looks like a giant even next to Kennedy and Trish." One of the advantages to having Grymek on the floor last season was the effectiveness of her high post screens (picks.) When she set a screen no one fought thru it...That really was to the benefit of the guards - especially Goodman... If Mitrovic can set screens like Grymek, that alone will earn her floor time.... GO BEAVS !!

GO BEAVS !! Her video shows a remarkable passing ability for a big, an ability to put the ball on the floor, and good hands for catching passes. These are all virtues that Grymek did not have. However, Grymek was probably more mobile than Mitrovic, so setting immovable picks might be the one thing that she can't do as well as Grymek.

I don't expect much from Jelena this year, and, given her scoped knee, she's not going to be in the kind of shape the others will be at the beginning of the season. If Kennedy and Taylor start off well, and Morris shows improvement, I still would not be surprised if she was redshirted, in spite of Andrea not being cleared. We've got a ton of bigs, and only so many minutes. Maddie and Janessa are will get the few minutes Jelena would have.
Division 1 can be a big adjustment for anybody, perhaps especially for international players. Ask Jasmine. And, once again, why maintain a logjam of big post players, all in the same class? Doesn't make sense to me.

I just want us to DESTROY the sucks and that crooked program along the way. I disagree! From her video's it appears she is very proficient in the low post. She displayed some very good quick moves on both offense and defense in the post. The question mark with her appears to be how well she will be able to run the floor. With her height and size and the moves she displayed, along with her hands, it appears she might be unstoppable in the low post. The guards need to practice their lob passes. That was the problem in respect to Gremik last season. Her hands, though not good, were not as bad as they appeared. She did not jump, so a lot of passes went of the ends of her fingers. Had they hit her hands with lobs she would have caught them. This issue created a lack of trust and so they were hesitant and usually got the ball to her late or not at all. When a post player establishes position, you need to get the ball to them quickly before the defender can begin to push them off their block. That along with drawing other defenders attention.

I understand, and apparently you have seen her play ( video I assume ), thus I stand corrected, and am looking even more forward to her presence on the floor. Being a 6’9” space consumer, in the key, - both on offense and defense, seems to be a potential game changer for the lady Beavs. I am sure that the speed up and down the floor can be addressed in a number of different ways and Scott and Staff are on top of that.

You can watch some video of her here. This was posted long ago. There's no question she's got some basketball skills that Ruth Hamblin can still, even after a brief stint as a pro, only dream about. Thanks for sharing that. That is a sweet move around the defender, and her balance- footwork and roll to the hoop, pretty much seal the deal. Hope her knee gets in shape early and that she can be an early season presence and power. Let’s see the sucks handle that !
