Oh come on, this is the same refrain for every team every camp. There are no winners when you're playing with yourself (hurhur). Besides, isn't the D supposed to be ahead of the O? That's what people say every year. They know the ins and outs of their opponent(our own offense) better than any actual opponent ever will. Additionally, we don't know the context of the situation. I don't know how niner runs scrimmages, but it's routine to have the 1s vs the 2s. Was this a case of the #1 D shutting down the #2 O a few times? If so, I say good.

You can only beat yourself when you play with yourself. Good for the defense.

In that same article, it says the #1 offense scored TDs on 2 of its 3 drives. The article is mixing situations and circumstances in the scrimmage. Defenses, ALWAYS, should be ahead of offenses in camps. Always. It is not bad if an offense struggles against it's own defense. It is real bad if the defense cannot stop your own offense ever. We should be focusing on the positive, in particular the impact of Gumbs and Roberts have had at OLB and ILB. Given that Gumbs has been taking it light, but Roberts has been a revelation. A real, significant, wrecking ball ILB on this defense alone is enough to significantly improve our performance.

Offense dominates a scrimmage ... defense sucks.
Defense dominates ... offense sucks.
You can't win.

Defense should be ahead of the offense for most teams at this point...

It actually bodes very well, in my opinion (if it accurately reflects anything and isn't just a case of the defense going against the 3rd-string offense or something). If I've learned anything over the years of Fall camp it is that you do NOT want your offense to be winning the day. A defense that cannot stop even their own offense in camp, especially early in camp, is probably going to struggle big time. Again, if this report in any way accurately reflects the defense being capable of stopping our #1 offense, then I find this very encouraging...especially given that we know from last season that our offense will probably be at least decent.
Go Beavs! Mike '84

Agreed - our offense has some capability and talent to move the ball, so a defense that can get stops here is a positive. Also, we couldn't stop anyone last year, whether their offense was good, bad, or had their third string in at half time. Go Beavs!

I remember a Spring Game when the coaches had to take Nick Barnett out of the game. He was pissed! He was also killing people! He and his defensive mates crushed the offense. Hmmm...that was a pretty good era, so I’m good with this report.
