Look at this photo from today's G-T. That's how you dribble a basketball. I hate the palming and carrying players are allowed to do today, sometimes it looks as if they are carrying a football.

You mean like this? Her crossover into a defender after her steal almost cost us that comeback ... her handles do make me uncomfortable at times.

Look at this photo from today's G-T. That's how you dribble a basketball. I hate the palming and carrying players are allowed to do today, sometimes it looks as if they are carrying a football. The palming is ridiculous today, but it’s seldom called unless the hand is completely underneath the ball and a player basically runs with it. As a coach, I fought teaching my players to carry it, and was proud of how my son handled the ball without doing so, but as I watched opponents get the edge I finally conceded that I wasn’t doing my own players justice with my righteous indignation, I changed the way I coached it. Officials will talk about “advantage” being the criteria by which they decide whether or not to call palming, but after watching a certain unnamed South Salem guard (ahem, Jeremiah Dominguez) gain clear advantage regularly by carrying the ball the entire game, I asked a couple of my friends in the Salem Officials Association why they let him do that. Their response: “we know he gets away with a ton, and we agree to crack down on it, but when game time rolls around, for some reason none of us follows through and calls him on it!” Maybe it was the fact that officials hated dealing with with South’s coaches at the time, but they never did hold him accountable. Carrying the ball has always been a pet peeve for me.

Yep - agree, If it doesn't get called, it's not traveling - and you are disadvantaged to not do it. That said, it takes practice, because if it looks awkward/jerky, they will call it. The game doesn't stay the same. If you watch any of the great 'cross-over' NBA players like Harden and Irving, the ball often is at or past 90 degrees, but it's done very smoothly. The ability to change directions with the ball when doing that is really tough to defend.

We've had many greats, but IMO, given the caliber of players around her, Pivek would be up there as a top 5 Player of all time at OSU. Lots of great guards have come through the program, but she's a true 5 tool + on everything.

Without doubt the main reason we are in the "sweet 16". Love her power moves to the net and shoots a running hook with either hand.

Mik has just about mastered the left handed drive to the bucket, finishing with a semi-hook and a slight clockwise spin....She was nowhere near that kind of delivery last year....VERY impressive. Remarkably, she seems to be better at finishing at the toughest moments of the tightest games... She attacks and finishes better than anyone on this team. By a mile. Maybe two. Great player. Great person. Oh yes. She never misses a shot to pad her rebound stats !! (Sorry, couldn't resist). GO BEAVS !!

Hardest worker, mvp, most fun to watch.=Mik I thought it would be impossible for anyone to replace Syd as my all-time favorite WBB. I was wrong! Or, Mik is just a right-handed version of Syd, with different skills but the same attributes. Both are outstanding individuals.

Hand on top of the ball, just like the rules say.

Could MP opt for the draft this year? One of the ESPN analysts intimated that last night, saying that it could be Mikayla's last game at Gill.

You have to turn 22 years old (or have exhausted your eligibility) in the calendar year in which you declare for the WNBA draft. This differs from the men's NBA, where you have to turn 13 in the year you enter the draft. I don't know Mikayla's age, but assume she would clear that hurdle or they wouldn't have mentioned it.
My understanding is that she wants to go to medical school and sports a Hamblinesque GPA in a difficult major. That doesn't sound like someone who would opt to leave school early to pursue a career in basketball.

I think you have to be born in 1997 to be eligible for this year's draft. SI makes it by about four days, I believe. I think MP will graduate this June and wants to start on graduate school before trying pro ball and then med school.
