One thing I noticed in last nights game was how much better Morris played. This is related to the improvement that people have seen in jo this season. How? It is because they are both more comfortable in the offense and defense.
Jo has never been as immobile as she appeared to many Beav fans. For one she was not comfortable in respect to her defensive position so that hesitancy was interpreted as immobility. Her very size also give the impression of slowness. If you watch her run down the floor after scores and compare it to most other bigger posts she is relatively faster than posts her size. The other thing is that her size makes her what was referred to as a space eater. She intimidates offensive players with out even having to elevate I first saw the effect she had during the TA&M game. She locked down the middle.
She still is not always in the best optimum position to score on the offensive end. She gets herself either too far under the basket or at a bad angle to use the backboard properly. But I have seen the same thing our to McCowan. Someone on this site said that McCowan or Brown would eat her up. I disagree. Her size would negate what McCown uses to dominate other teams on the offensive boards or low block. McCowan has never played against a player with the combination of Jo's size and height before. Just this weak I witnessed an unskilled frosh with size totally negate and out play an experienced McDonald all american in a high school game. This All American was a huge 6'5" post who was used to using her size and strength to dominate. When she faced a player who mirrored he size she did not know how to respond.
Now Brown does have an outside shot but lacks a move to the basket from outside. I have always believed Jo was very capable of staying with and negating them on considerably on defense. She only has had problems against shorter and quicker players. But experience will help in that respect. It's about match ups. Her weakness still is getting her hands on offensive boards and positioning, but I see improvement in that area. She is becoming more aggressive in respect to fighting for boards and position. I think that might be some of her problem. She is too meek. I see her often defer boards to her own teammates. She should try to get every board teammate or not.
As I mentioned earlier, I also see vast improvement in Morris's game. She might be ready earlier than expected ( at least by me ) to contribute come playoff time if needed.
