So it's early, but it's possible we are still very good at baseball? It is possible. We will not open with the double digit win streak of previous years but do not be discouraged. This team will compete with anyone by the time we get to May.

Fair points... I also think you could defend the coaches decision to pull him based on giving up the walks. At this level, you throw strikes or you don't throw. Glad he made it through the first outing of they year and curious to think about what if that long loud foul ball was fair... this board might have been in melt down. But. Nothing to see hear... move along

It was a perfect time to give Walling some time. See where he is, what he can do, and give him some good live action. Gives him a chance to learn and to grow. I believe it is outstanding coaching to use a guy you might need down the line and just get the jitters out of the way.

This team will compete with anyone by the time we get to May. There’s a lot to like about our potential, I think. There are a number of guys who could really be dangerous offensive players. Time will tell whether they can build consistency at the plate and maintain productivity, especially when opposing coaches have plenty of film on them to know strengths and weaknesses. The “bones” are there to be a pretty good offensive group. It’s tough at OSU, where we are just two years removed from a couple straight years when we had more dangerous hitters than I can remember seeing on a college team. We’re pretty spoiled. On the bump, I liked the work that most everyone did. Chamberlain had some shaky moments following our 9 run offensive assault in the bottom of the first. No pitcher will ever ask his team to NOT spot him the biggest lead possible, but sometimes we underestimate the impact of a long break like that for the guy on the mound. He got on track and threw 6 innings total for us. Burns and Sebby were lights out. Walling saw the first two hitters he faced rip the ball through openings in the infield, then he had trouble throwing strikes and walked in a couple of guys, but even he bore down and closed it out. We had a couple of sloppy plays on D, made a couple of real nice ones, and turned at least one nice DP that I remember. Defense and pitching are said to be strengths, so I feel good about getting things tightened up and being tough in that area. Beautiful weather, quick explosive offense, and a nice win in the first game. I really enjoyed the first game of the Canham era.

To be honest, I was a bit disappointed in the offense, aside from the first inning.

We have a number of talented Freshmen who are going to contribute and it likely will take some time for some of them to make the adjustment to the higher level of competition.

yes you are right. freshman looked good ( not great) but they contributed. which is exactly what their coaches and teammates expected them to do. Pitching out of this world. Walling struggled to throw strikes but kudos to him and a big first inning and his coach to stick with him get the last out and not burn up a guy we may need later. Builds confidence.

We seem to have some speed and played aggressive base running. That 9 run first probably threw Chamberlain off a bit.Almost a 45 Minute First inning. Looking forward to this game Today. A little bit more watching before I can tell where we really are. Was glad to see the shucks get clobbered in their opener. Hope we keep coming down here as Beaver Nation represents quite well. The folks by Me were from Texas. Many Seniors and snowbirds as well.

Speed and base running can create runs when we have the inevitable offensive doldrums.

Just offhand, this is the most brutal schedule that I can remember. There is not a soft stretch. That is my biggest worry. The next 3 games in Surprise are against tough teams, but adding MSU, SDSU, Santa Barbara, and Oklahoma State? Brutal schedule without even thinking of Pac12 play.
