Guys, posting an opinion you have formed is the correct thing to do. To do optherwise would be intellectually dishonest. I have watched ZT closely his entire career at OSU. A week or so ago I said he was a real asset to the team. Here are other opinions I have of him, he is the best first baseman we have, he hustles and plays the game hard, he is a Senior and a team leader. When it comes to hitting and hitting with men on base, I also have an opinion on that as well.
Horrors . . . . I have offended the ZT fan club, albeit not intentially, just voicing an honest opinion. Well, I like ZT as well and said so in a post a week or two ago. To review - good defense, hustles, plays hard, Senior and team leader. I respect all that. Zak at the plate and with runners on, I have a little different opinion.
Understand that judgement did not come from watching 10 at bats in Arizona. I have followed ZT since his HS days at Sherwood. That opinion is based on a career. Let's take a look at offensive productivity at OSU. His career totals to date are 99 games played with 65 of those being starts. At the plate he's 60-238 and a career BA of .252. In 238 official at bats plus another 22 unofficial (13 BB and 9 HBP) making it 270, he has 12 extra base hits, 9 doubles, a triple and 2 home runs. That equates to an XBH every 22.5 times at bat. He has driven in 33 runs and has 76 career total bases in 99 games. He has struck out 60 times or once every 4.5 at bats. His K:BB ratio is 2.72:1. ZT has 0 stolen bases in 0 attempts.
I go by what my eyes are telling me. However those career stats are telling and you can draw your own conclusions.
And letting the pitcher hit? Certainly not in some cases but absolutely in others. Keven Abel was a trusted hitter at San Diego-Madison, Bryce Fehmel was an All-CIF shortstop at Agoura and hit .325 against some of soCal's best pitching. Christian Chamberlain was a .500 hitter with home runs at Reno HS. We have a freshman, Andrew Walling from RA Long in Longview that is a terrific hitter, PC and the staff debated all but Abel until they had a look on the mound - position player or pitcher.
With a little time in the cage, damm rights I'd hit the pitcher. How big a drop off do you think that would have been this past week?
