Cristobal and Leavitt's huge egos just could not co-exist together, so Leavitt was odd man out. Interesting now oregon will have two young and relatively inexperienced coordinators, with the naming of Keith Heyward as DC.

Bosses get to pick their own assistants and this is not an infrequent occurrence in the work world. Sometimes the folks you inherit just don't work out with you.

Keith Hayward-Johnson was an excellent Beaver CB and coached and contributed to the Beaver program. Whether his promotion is as a Duck or not he is still a Beaver and I will wish him success except when they play the Beavers>

Super classy to wait until after the class was signed to announce what was undoubtedly a decision made months ago by Cristobal.
I would go as far as to say that this was an handshake agreement with KHJ going back to last year, which is why conversations about him coming here never went anywhere. No reason to fire early and be in the running for top name DCs when you already planned on internally promoting. a DB coach is a way easier fill later in the season.

I will never forget KHJ leading cheers and towel waving to the crowd in Reser stadium his first year as an Washington Husky assistant. Washington was running up the score on the hapless Beavers, and KHJ was leading the dancing and facing the home crowd waving the white flag in their face. I lost a lot of respect for the ex-Beaver that night.

It will be interesting to see how KHJ does as DC. Leavitt certainly improved their defense while he was the DC. Hate to root against a former Beaver but it's way easier when they are at tsdtr.

He is a yuck now and I will root for him and his team to go 0-12 every year.

Leavitt had pretty much nothing to do with their recruiting. It was known that he was gone, as he was expected to get a head coaching job somewhere. He was not in on any of their recruiting visits. He’s just still pissed about not getting the head coaching job there.

But also obvious that someone recognized that Leavitt could actually coach, a trust sorely missing from the rest of the recruiting bunch, and mandated that he stayed. Alas, it didn’t work. Hard to work for people that don’t know as much as you.

That said, their s%#t D will be even s%#ttier next year. Promoting a first time DC is a tremendous risk, as much as everyone seems to love Heyward.
