Gress may not be willing to do the 10 minutes of googling, but I guess I am willing to spend a sixth of my lunch break doing it: Top Califonia 2017 WR recruits based on 247.comI included Hodgins (#4), plus the 10 other top CA WR: Rank | Name | Stars | School | Stats (rec, yards, td) | Comment | 1 | Joseph Lewis
| 5 | USC | 4, 39, 0 | Saddest story of the lot. Has been in and out of prision on domestic abuse charges and is no longer playing football | 2 | Osiris St. Brown
| 4 | Stanford | 8, 204, 1 | Still on the team | 3 | Terrell Bynum
| 4 | UW | 0, 0, 0 | Played in all 2018 games, no catches | 4 | Isaiah Hodgins
| 4 | OSU | 90, 1151, 7 | Go Beavs! | 5 | Keyshawn Johnson
| 4 | NEB then ARIZ then...
Louisiana-Monroe?? | None | The famous NFLers son. Went to Riley's team with Gebbia, but has a marijuana charge and then left when Scott Frost came on board and is now in Louisiana? | 6 | Jamire Calvin
| 4 | Famously committed to OSU on national TV,
then said NAAAAAAAAH, WSU | 75, 797, 4 | Interesting that the other guy we had high intrest in is the only other WR with any success. Should have stuck with your intial intincts, Jamire | 7 | Taariq Johnson
| 3 | CAL | None | No longer at CAL, and no longer playing? Where did he go?
| 8 | Alex Cook
| 3 | UW | 1, 26, 0 | Still on team
| 9 | Bryan Thompson
| 3 | UTAH | 6, 108, 0 | Still on team
| 10 | Maurice Bell
| 3 | Colorado | None | Still on team | 11 | Brian Casteel
| 3 | ARIZ | 1, 24, 0 | Still on team |
Not sure what exactly it proves other that Isaiah is clearly the most successful college player up to this point, its one position or one class of one year. I don't think anyone questions the efficacy of stars predicting success of failure for any individual player, and clearly it bothers Isaiah that his ranking was not where he thought it should be, and this data backs up what he was saying. The other clear indication from Gress's article is that the actual production of these rankings are shrouded in mystrey and are way more products of connection, exposure, player interavticity with the recruitniks, physical deminsions, combine style stats, smoke, mirrors, and pretty much anything and everything BUT actual football skill. Jonathan Smith and his coaches do their own FOOTBALL and OREGON STATE evaluation and it seems clear that their list and 247/rivals list are quite different. As I said, small sample size of fairly cherry picked data, so take it with a grain of salt. But the data backs up Isaiahs comments

OSU would've taken any of those guys. I'm sure we offered most of them, or at least reached out to several who said "yeah I'm not coming." This was part of my problem with Nemec's comments. He made it sound like OSU was ignoring highly rated kids and instead playing it safe with kids they knew would come. Maybe our approach needs to change in order to get more buy-in from higher rated kids, but again, winning cures all.
Having all the catches and yards is great, but remember that a lot of those guys are at schools with much deeper talent pools at WR. No guarantee some of those guys aren't going to have huge seasons in the next 2-3 years.

It's very easy to say that someone's approach to recruiting doesn't work, but it's not as if a coach can say he's gonna change the next year and --voila!-- now you've got a top ten class. Nemec's comments come off as just another attempt to stir the pot.

Nemec always loved GA reaching for the stars and changing the profile of OSU recruiting. Then when GA left he writes an article talking about how dysfuntional GA's recruiting was. Nemec is a snakey little douche
