I agree with a previous poster that this is exactly the type of game we would have lost last year. This game was by no means pretty, especially in those middle 30 minutes, but we were able to take it to them in the first 5 and most importantly the last 5. Off the top of my head I believe we were down 54-47 and then went on a 11-0 run to make it 58-54. Gutty win when we clearly were not at our best most of the night. ODU did a great job of defending Tres and making others step up and G/Kelley did. Can't complain with 3-0 and if we can get past what likely will be Mizzou on Sunday we could play #12 K State on Monday which would be a huge boost to the SOS. GO BEAVS!

Love the optimism. ODU's Sagarin rating puts them at the equivalent of 9th in the Pac-12, just ahead of us in the 10th spot. So it appears at this stage we will be competitive for the 9th spot. We will need to step it up if we want to have a winning season and compete for an NIT spot. LOL... If you're going to come by and rain on the parade, at least use something else besides Sagarin rating after 3 freaking games or just come by to remind us that you still hate Tinkle. It's ok. Sagarin: Nebraska #1 San Francisco #14 Kentucky #39 Oregon #55 Villanova #101 LOLOLOLOL

Much needed win, hope Missouri is next. Last time I looked Mizzou was a 17 pt favorite, so I think we'll get our wish. 46-42 Kennesaw in the 2nd. Take that Vegas Sports Books.

We were down 9 at one point with maybe 6 minutes to go. Stevie answered their 3 with a 3 of his own to cut the lead back down to 6.

best thing about the win today is avoiding the loser's bracket. This is nice but that would have been intolerable.
Game ball goes to Big Glig. Or as Jon Warren calls him, Big Glig.

I ponied up the money for Flohoops, so I was able to watch the game and not deal with squinting (wincing) and trying to deal with the radio word pictures.....
This is the sort of game we would have lost in past years (as has been pointed out). I was actually mentally bracing myself for the "promising start, but ending in an L" MO from the Beavs of recent yore, but they did pull it out.
Our bigs did well - Big G was a presence and scored when he had opportunities. Kelly disrupted a lot of shots, and messed up some almost sure layins for ODU. But ODU physical edge was obvious - a scrappy team with muscle is difficult for us to deal with (esp. our slight posts).
I am concerned we do not have enough dynamicism at PG - ET can bring the ball up and mostly keep it under control.....but I don't see him creating many opportunities for himself or his teammates off the dribble. I saw some serious ball handling chops among some of our newcomers in the brief cameos they had at Gill - do you sacrifice some scoring for ball handling and dribbling acumen? (esp. when your PG goes 1-8). In all fairness to ET, he did go 5-6 from the line.
My other concern I mentioned earlier - our bigs are tall, but not wide....
For us to win even though ODU was able to keep Tres in check was nice. Hopefully some of our missteps can be ascribed to jet lag. We played D (for most of the game) with purpose for much of the game, though when we would slack off on D, the other team would go on a run. And we do slack off in stretches, not just a possession here or there. The other issue is how some of our upperclassmen just seem to eschew fundamentals (I don't think I can lay this at WT's door). With ~12 seconds left and the lead, we corral a rebound. But do we pull it out and run clock or force a foul? No, we go back up against ~3 defenders. We also took some ill-advised, not set, contested, early in the shot clock "heat check" 3s (the kind of thing that should result in the coach screaming "we can get that shot any time we want, and we only want it if there are 1-2 seconds left on the shot clock").
That said, I saw improvement in our "dribbling around with no purpose" issue, and in our passing into the bigs. An encouraging win. A close game that went our way. And we do seem to be working in the newcomers, at a somewhat glacial pace, but maybe that is where they are at right now.
3-0 is nice. Let's hope this positive trend continues! Go Beavers!

No question this was the kind of game we would lose almost every time in the last few years/decades. Great to see a gutty comeback after traveling a bunch of time zones to a tropical island. And Big G showed up ....BIG. Didn’t see that coming. Kelley might even be a significant role player this year, another surprise. Given his background he seemed a long shot at best. Lets get another W!

I was at the first two games and certainly didn't see that. Vernon has been very tentative with the ball in his appearances and that is why he only played 3 minutes today.

True that. But, as skeptical as I am... baby steps. This was a neutral site win over a team with a history of winning. However, it's not equivalent to a Pac12 win... especially on the road. So... let's see how the next game pans out.

Seems that's all that was being done. Don't think anyone can argue that ODU isn't anything but in the lowest tier of Pac12 schools. Didn't feel a "drop" from that post. Mountain/ant hill...
